APRIL 2018 Manager s Report By Jack Stevens General Manager The pace always picks up towards the end of our busy season Our crews have been very busy responding to work orders preparing for shows and classes and performing much needed maintenance and repairs The last month also had more than its fair share of additional projects that came along somewhat unexpectedly the most unique of those was the need to get a well in the middle of our property back up and running The pump head on our well near the four way stop sign stopped working Usually when this happens you pull the head and either repair or replace it In this case the head which is located some 300 underground became bound in the piping leading to it and would not come out What should have been a relatively simple one day repair ended up taking over a week and required the use of three different pieces of heavy equipment to set a new head in position and get our well back in operation We made progress on two significant fronts in the last month First we had our Mangrove trimming contractor remove a large section of dead Mangrove roots on the northeast side of the bridge to Far Harbor and open up the channel to the southwest of the bridge This project leaves us more prepared for future rain events by removing one of the worst areas of potential blockage along Clower Creek The other area of significant progress is our plans for the new buffer zone along the main drive Our community meeting in March related to the proposed new native and Florida friendly landscaping along the main road was very informative and the feedback from the owners who participated left us in a good position to keep this project moving forward Our staff Grounds Committee Board and Landscape Architect have done a great job to date of developing a plan that is now entering its final phase This month we should be able to wrap up the design phase accumulate pricing from our suppliers and vendors and put together an AFE to take to the board requesting funding for this project Once funding is approved we will begin the process of locating the proper trees purchasing materials and getting the project in the ground Availability of proper plantings especially the larger species of trees will impact our schedule but we should have plenty of time to find the right trees and have the project completed over the summer 5 In the end this is going to be an area that can be enjoyed by many with dense colorful vegetation a winding path that ties into the existing butterfly garden area benches to relax on and opportunities for unique areas to enjoy a natural habitat The plants we are selecting for this area will attract birds and butterflies which will be a benefit to the entire property This area will also provide guidance for future decisions about Native and Florida Friendly plantings that can be incorporated into our overall landscape plan These type of improvements will enhance Pelican Cove naturally thus reducing our impact on the environment and adding to our enjoyment of the natural world around us Office Notes Address and Phone Number Changes Notify the PC Office of any changes in contact numbers and your mailing address when you are leaving for the summer months This will ensure you receive any important notices and your PC News House Checkers It is important that owners do their best to protect their property and that of their neighbors by turning the water OFF to the unit and hiring a house checker to perform BIWEEKLY inspections while away from Pelican Cove The longer a leak goes unreported the more damage there is to a unit If you don t know where the water shut off is for your unit simply complete a work request a few days before you are scheduled to leave and a staff member will stop by to show you Pets A reminder that The Rules We Live By state that owners walkers must clean up after pets Pets cats and dogs must be on a leash at all times when outside the unit Please Pick up after your pets

APRIL 2018 High Tea An Elegant Success By Melissa Starr Wenig I have always loved High Tea For many of my birthdays Joel and I would brave the snow and ice of a late December day to go to High Tea at the Four Seasons in downtown Boston There was something about the mixture of pomp and circumstance elegance and an intimacy that spoke to me The maitre de would escort us Enchanting harpist Elizabeth Borsodi to a beautifully set table The fireplace was blazing The well dressed waiters were ready for our command Then came the ritual of the tea pouring the scone presentation and the tea sandwiches piled high The white bread crusts trimmed oh so perfectly Over all the years this experience never failed to elicit great happiness The High Tea Cultural Events fundraiser seriously rivaled that of our Four Seasons experience Wilbanks felt like the mansion it once was Each room felt warm and inviting and yes elegant The center room offered a more casual seating arrangement and the side rooms were set up like formal tearooms Tables were beautifully adorned with tablecloths period china and silverware 7 playing It was just the right backdrop for this truly elegant High Tea We are hoping that this will become a yearly event adding to all of our High Tea memories Many thanks to the following people who made this event happen Rhonda Liss and Iris Bergas High Tea co chairs Joel and Calva Leonard Lois and David Wilbanks A beautiful setting for a high tea Kastner Susan and David Feltus Sharon Miller Cindy Wollach Joe Reid Rich Farkas Philip Sandler Barbara Bergman Helene Crawford Arlene Breskin and Jo Ubogy Lou Levitt s PCU Class Inspires Action By Naomi A Schwartz In Lou Levitt s PCU Public Policy class we learned that to make a difference we would need to communicate with public officials To that end several members of the class met recently with Sally Dionne a senior staff person in Congressman Vern Buchanan s office in Sarasota Our focus was on two topics climate change and gun control The food well the food was scrumptious and plentiful The tea sandwiches were filled with homemade ingredients egg cucumber and smoked salmon and chicken salad clearly not from Publix And the crusts were cut perfectly just like the Four Seasons The discussion on climate change was most relevant to those of us who live here at PC We offered our appreciation of Representative Buchanan s memo to President Trump which urged the president to reconsider his decision to withdraw from the recent Paris Accords We also recommended that Representative Buchanan consider introducing a congressional proclamation that could further pressure the president to reconsider his nonsupport of the Paris Accords one that could truly be a bipartisan proclamation There is a great deal of support in Sarasota and across the country for such an action The scones were light and delicate and were accompanied by a myriad of spreads from lemon curd to wild berry jam The cr me fraiche was to die for We were received courteously and all of us felt that we had learned a great deal by planning for this visit and participating in this discussion Lou taught us well But what this High Tea had that made it stand above all others in my limited experience was the enchanting harpist Elizabeth Borsodi Hushed silence and whispers rarely found at Pelican Cove were a testament to Elizabeth s Participants were Willard and Roberta Block Jeffrey Borenstein Ivan Krakowsky Lou Levitt Naomi Schwartz and George Ubogy Upon arriving we were greeted and escorted to our seats A formally dressed gentleman would travel between the rooms making sure that we were comfortable And although the food was a buffet from time to time servers would come around with trays of offerings

APRIL 2018 9 months ago Rebecca attended a Buildings and Facilities Committee meeting She held Ellena s hand and rocked Kai on her hip while she laid out her request She presented the design she wanted and pointed out the recommendation implicit in an identical swing hanging at Selby Gardens Within a couple of months the swing was in place and the Jaegers as well as community grandchildren and perhaps a few older residents enjoy the breeze It will hold over 600 pounds We owe the Jaegers thanks Luke and Rebecca Jaeger with daughter Ellena and son Kai Meet Your Neighbors The Jaeger Family By Donna Anderson In January at the beginning of Season we met two of Pelican Cove s centenarians Now as snowbirds pack for the trek home we look to our youthful year round neighbors There are several Grovehouse hosts a lad of six or seven Harborhouse is home to a tween and teen Far Harbor had a high school junior when we moved in five years ago He now attends college but for several summers he has taught tennis to all comers The newest and youngest are Luke and Rebecca Jaeger with their children Ellena four years old and her brother Kai almost two Rebecca is a native Floridian who grew up in Myakka Luke was born in Newport News VA The couple met at the University of South Florida Sarasota and have been married seven years Their first home was a sailboat a two year arrangement When they bought a house they sold the boat but Luke s longing for water wasn t satisfied on a 3 acre lot Altogether they had 20 craft six vessels in the front yard at one time flipping them looking for a dream boat She loved the trees but he missed living on the water They eventually sold the house and bought a condo with a beautiful bay view but no yard Then Kai was born So began the search for a three bedroom three bath condo with a marina or a slip There were a few However all lacked front lawns or shade or both Luke says This is an interesting property because of the shade It is the one community we found where you could walk outside in the sun We fell in love with it adds Rebecca She said it brought to mind Atlas Shrugged whereas Luke found it evocative of Jurassic Park They live in a Treehouse with plenty of trees a sand pit and for a while a dirt pile where they could bury and dig for dinosaurs They also have use of a platform swing hung from a live oak on Treehouse Circle It is an addition they pursued Some Everyone asks them why they moved to a community without young children Rebecca says they re used to that in Florida Even in neighborhoods with kids no one s outside Between school computer play homework and nannies children are in the house during the academic year During the summer there s no place to hide from the sun In Pelican Cove they ve learned they can be outside year round I felt so isolated as a mom staying home all day But here all I have to do is take out the trash and I have meaningful conversations with people that are fascinating Everybody is so nice When winter passes and activities have pretty well ceased when the humidity proves to be just too much they ve found inspiration at the Pavilion They can run around and play tag put on shows using the stage for dramatic effect and have lessons when the piano is available With reduced road traffic Rebecca feels free to jog with a stroller while Ellena rides her trike Some ask What do you do all weekend Rebecca replies Anything we want They don t worry about lawn work they can go out on the boat quickly or walk a short distance to the swing Perhaps their biggest perk is having Luke s mother live within walking distance Kathleen Jaeger is a new resident of Glenhouse She helps with and enjoys her grandchildren She has become an active member of the community and is known for her bubbles kites and balloon centerpieces Even their friends love Pelican Cove s landscape and its community feel Several have said they would enjoy living here but the condo fees on top of a mortgage can be overwhelming As wages rise perhaps we can hope to see more young people join us There s something about the laughter of little ones If anything is missing for a young family it might be a children s swim hour where kids can splash freely as they are wont to do Even a designated time slot at one pool on a trial basis would be nice The Jaegers would relish that leniency but they also want to be respectful of the community at large As things stand now they feel supported when people look at the children smile and repeat that this is the best part of life It makes Rebecca feel like a strong mom We love it here Kai turned one and took his first steps Ellena enjoys climbing and swimming The world s your oyster when you live in paradise
