AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2015 4 Association Anniversary Save the Date Pelican Cove University By Virginia Tashian By JoEllen DeMarco On Sunday November 15 there will be a party in Pelican Cove to celebrate PCCA s 35th Anniversary as one association vs the seventeen original condo associations The Social Club founded in 1977 a talented group of party planners and the organization believed to be PC s longest ongoing club will partner with members of the Communications Committee and others in the community to make this a fun and festive occasion open to all residents The second summer session of Pelican Cove University has started with Great Books discussions led by Toby Cosin at the Pavilion on Tuesday afternoons Thanks to the generosity of past Great Books participants we were able to obtain enough loaned copies of the necessary books so no one had to purchase one The summer session will continue in August with David Triggle s class which will start at 10 a m August 13 also at the Pavilion This class has an intriguing title The decline and fall of almost everything It will run for four weeks So save the date and meanwhile review or pick up a copy of The History of Pelican Cove available in the PC Office for 15 for fascinating background information From the Library Corner By Betty Mitchell A few modifications have been made to the Pelican Cove library at the Pavilion over the summer that should be called to the attention of the residents 1 The Biography section has been relabeled by the person featured and not by the author 2 We have added a new section called New Arrivals after receiving a wonderful suggestion from one of the residents As appropriate donations are received they will be properly labeled along with an additional green sticker They will be placed in the end cap shelving next to the end cap that holds the DVD s for a determined length of time before being shelved in the appropriate section 3 The audio book tapes and movie tapes have been donated to the Goodwill due to newer technology available 4 We will continue to supply audio book CD s Since we only have a few we would appreciate additional donations to the collection 5 There is one shelf on the end cap bookcase that has books labeled Please Return to Pelican Cove Library These are a collection of stories by various authors in one book and therefore cannot be shelved by a single author 6 Lastly an attempt has been made to further classify the non fiction books with a sticker denoting type war adventure financial etc Thank you to our many residents who continually donate their books movies magazines and music so others can enjoy them too The Fall session of PCU will have a lecture discussion by Justin Spring on The Five Theories of the Creation of the Sphinx He will hold this session at the Harbor Club on December 1 2015 at 1 30 Justin began his discussions about his Egyptian project last December As part of the 35th Anniversary of Pelican Cove project the University will be presenting a class starting in January Tales Out of Pelican Cove Exploring the Non fiction Short Story presented by Jan Hasselbring With the goal of writing a tale for the Tales Out of Pelican Cove project the class will explore the evolution of the non fiction short story study examples entertain guest writers and practice writing our own stories as part of the 35th Anniversary of Pelican Cove project This course is for anyone interested in writing and perhaps sharing an experience from their life The full University schedule has been completed and it is a full one There will be many favorites returning plus the introduction of some new teachers and courses In addition some veteran teachers will surprise you with completely different offerings Social Club News Octoberfest Planned By Beth Duggan The first activity this fall will be Pelican Cove s version of Octoberfest Mark your calendars for September 27 so you can join in the festivities and enjoy German beer and food Ilse Soar will be hosting the party so contact her to volunteer or if you have any questions Leiderhosen anyone On May 24 the Pelican Cove Social Club hosted the last formal event of the season a Memorial Day Brunch Attendees enjoyed a variety of deli sandwiches following a short program honoring our military attendees

AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2015 6 Far Harbor Pool Building Connie Lang photo Pavilion Path Landscape Connie Lang photo Improvements to the Far Harbor Bathhouse Path Extension North Side Pavilion Pool By Jack Stevens Buildings Maintenance Coordinator By Mike O Byrne Grounds Maintenance Coordinator The Far Harbor pool bathhouse received some much needed maintenance improvements in June Over the years the building had sagged due to failing structural wood posts on the back side of the enclosure The building was raised and leveled the failing posts were removed and new concrete supports were set in place Once the building s support system was corrected the old vinyl flooring was replaced with a brick paver system The Grounds Crew completed the extension of the shell path on the north side of the Pavilion from Pelican Cove Road to Treehouse Circle This project gives the dog walkers another direction to walk their dogs and stay within the Pelican Cove Rules We Live By and maintains some privacy for the Treehouse residents The new paver flooring provides a finish that is non slip even when walked on with wet feet In order to install this flooring a concrete composite board was installed throughout the building This concrete based sub floor allows the tile finish which could not be applied to the existing wood structure The rooms were trimmed with a paver base and the end result provides a quality slip free environment for the swimmers at this pool The bathhouse will be receiving new toilet partitions and doors in the coming months to complete the repairs and maintenance of this building We will be installing a higher quality non slip flooring to the Wilbanks pool bathhouse in the near future We hope everyone enjoys these upgrades made to enhance the quality and safety of our pool areas Quote of the Month The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it move with it and join the dance Alan Watts English Philosopher Many new plants were added and some were moved so that the path could be extended Additional parking spaces were constructed for golf carts so that when the employees work in the Pavilion the carts will be out of the pathway Road Work Underway By Alice Hawrilenko With the completion of the storm water vault installations the final phase of an extensive road work project which began in 2013 is now underway Facilities Maintenance Manager Jack Stevens anticipates the work will be completed the first week in September The work includes parking spaces and carports Owners will be notified to move their vehicles as the work progresses In preparation for this work trees have been removed because roots were causing damage to the roads and carport surfaces This was particularly evident on Pelican Point Drive where it has been necessary to remove a number of trees including the mammoth schefflera that camouflaged building 1528 The trees will be replaced but according to grounds crew leader Henry Sasser the variety of replacement plantings has yet to be determined

AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2015 7 New Vaults Help Little Sarasota Bay By Jack Stevens Buildings Maintenance Coordinator Vault Installation almost done Alice Hawrilenko photo Storm Water Sluiceway Connie Lang photo Run off into the waters along our coast is a serious problem Pelican Cove has adopted practices to limit the amount of chemicals we use that could end up in the water system We do not use excessive fertilizer or chemical treatments on our vegetation and our pest control activities are designed to avoid allowing poisons into our waters One thing that we have wanted to reduce is the amount of silt we allow to flow into the water system Silt is a solid dust like sediment that water and wind can carry and deposit on land and in the water Silt is made up of rock and mineral particles that are larger than clay but smaller than sand When silt settles to the bottom of a body of water it has a smothering effect It can kill plants or other small organisms smother fish eggs and young aquatic life and cover rocks where fish food lives If the silt does not settle to the bottom the water ends up being dirty or muddy Muddy water does not allow light to pass through for use by plants and other aquatic life Once again Pelican Cove has taken action on the community s commitment to being good stewards of the environment For many years there has been much discussion about what Pelican Cove can do to help save Little Sarasota Bay Many ideas have been brought forward by the community and researched by staff and committees for ways to reduce the damage our run off does to the Bay After much discussion with the community committees and our civil engineer it was decided that one of the best plans to reduce the amount of silt that PC adds to the harbor waters and ultimately Little Sarasota Bay was to install large silt collection boxes at locations where our road run off enters the harbor In late June we removed three existing catch basins that collect run off from our roads prior to it entering the harbor These existing catch basins were a standard size for their use and held roughly 90 gallons of water While they had been retrofitted with filter systems the boxes were too small to successfully capture the silt and solids that were running off into our harbor These catch basins were replaced with new vaults specifically designed to collect silt Each of our three new concrete vaults holds 1 250 gallons of water While collecting almost 3 750 gallons of run off the vaults capture silt inside the concrete boxes instead of letting it flow into our harbor When the vaults accumulate enough silt we will have them pumped out and the silt will be properly disposed of instead of settling into our harbor and Little Sarasota Bay This project was approved and part of the funding was paid for by the Community Foundation Fund to Save Little Sarasota Bay Pool Safety By Lisa Yellin This summer as in past summers we have been experiencing damage at several of our pools Let s please remember and remind our guests about PC pool safety The ladders at the pools are for climbing in and out they are not to be used as equipment to do handstands or any other amusements gymnastics Pool lights are there for safety reasons and are not to be pocked prodded or used to stand on or as steps to get out of the pool Poles and rings are emergency safety equipment and should not be used as toys The only flotation devices allowed in our pools are noodles swimmies and life jackets Rafts tubes and other inflatables are not permitted Pool use rules are posted at each pool Our community relies on its residents and guests to abide by them in order to insure a safe and enjoyable environment

AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2015 8 Rip Rap Area End of Bayhouse Point By Mike O Byrne A new Drainage Box was installed at the end of Bayhouse Point Drive for additional filtration of pollutants and sediment that can potentially enter Little Sarasota Bay The entire rip rap was removed and cleaned and prior to it being reinstalled a new filter cloth was put down to help prevent the rip rap from sinking into the soil We also added another four yards of rip rap The shell path was widened to make it more convenient to transport the kayaks from their storage area to the launching area The old medical office building at Pelican Plaza is no more Jack Livingston photo Pelican Plaza Update When the road is repaved the configuration will be altered a bit so that we can direct the water flow into the rip rap area By doing this we anticipate less wash out of the shells and better filtration of sediment that would otherwise flow into the Bay By Alice Hawrilenko As many summer residents have noticed the old medical office building which backed up to the landscape buffer recently installed by Benderson as part of its rehabilitation of Pelican Plaza has been demolished In a note to General Manager Connie Lang Virginia Tashian asked whether or not the demolition was a surprise to management and if there was any update on the planned restaurant for the site Like many of us Virginia is especially concerned about the health of the pond on the corner of the property Connie replied Virginia Yes the demolition was a surprise to management Benderson has no current plans to build a restaurant It Benderson Corp is still in negotiations with Robert Morris regarding the Denny s restaurant parcel At present it appears that a parking lot will replace the demolished building Bayhouse Point Riprap and Catch basin Connie Lang photo Grounds Manager Mike O Byrne will be meeting with the Benderson Landscape Manager soon to discuss the details of the extension of the reclaimed water line along Vamo Road and will continue to discuss the health of the buffer landscape and of the pond The PCNews will touch base with Mike before the next issue to see what progress has been made with regard to the pond and the restaurant which was widely and publicly alluded to by Benderson during its negotiations with PC over the landscape buffer Since the last issue SportsCuts has opened in the plaza adjacent to Lucky Nails Real Estate Sales Pelican Cove has had 30 real estate sales year to date through July 2015 as compared with 41 through July 2014 Summer Fun Kayak Canoe Board Team Left to right and Back to Front Lisa Yellin Judy Drohlich and her canoe Mark Hebert standing on his board Judy Limekiller and Mark s lovely granddaughter Kayla

AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2015 9 Hi Mom and Dad in heaven you are staring right down at me through that cloud I can feel and see you I know that you are the reason we came upon this place just happened on it and you are making it so perfect for me I invite my parents to join us as the black suited server arrives with my main course We sit on four lush red chairs A work of art two small thick cuts of fillet of duckling topped with almonds surrounded with soft lush kumquats crystallized quinces sitting on an orange sauce surrounded by green herb leaves and four purple vegetable leaves fan out Dots of the gravy artistically adorn the orange sauce The meal is prepared gluten free for me and served with gluten free bread for my special diet Amboise Chateau Public Domain taken from Wickipedia The Loire River Valley An Entertaining and Special Experience In My Life By Jane Aptekar Krantz Here is another example of a Tale Out Of Pelican Cove See page 4 for more information on this program In a restaurant of terraced gardens just below the Amboise Chateau bordered by high cave dwellings dug into slopes of rocks now used to store wines I sit quietly I stare out over the Loire River one of the last wild rivers in Europe From the second story I gaze out over small grassy plants in the window ledge through lush green trees to a single fishing boat in the river The long grey barge has a large wooden shack on its hull It is used to catch fish and eel in the middle of the night but only in the month of May and expressly for the restaurant Trees and greenery and dried brown grasses blow in the slight wind The river is settling in for evening Seven thirty p m is considered early dinner hour in the French culture The sky blue up high is waning and offset by a single jagged white cloud that passes by quickly At that moment one of the male staff clad in a tuxedo like suit with pointy black shoes that clank rapidly on the wood floors comes and meticulously places my fork upside down on the yellow linen tablecloth A sharp steak knife is placed with steadfast accuracy on the right My taste buds and tongue have suddenly come alive for the first time in years as I bite a morsel of Fois Gras duck liver thinly layered with dried plums acid dates and blackcurrant jelly A single green leaf adorns the plate with four little dots of liquids My mouth is a buzz Just as I stare up at the passing white cloud my heart opens up smiling Dad I remember you telling me of your trips to the Bordeaux region of France where you were wined and dined in chateaus and castles As a food and drink editor you were always eating fine meals like this When I was a college student back then I felt a little jealous that you and mom went off and left me back home by myself My mother chimed in Yes Janie we understand and so we wanted you to have a special dining experience like this now that you are in France We found you a fine meal that could accommodate your gluten free diet since that is what keeps you so healthy My father added You are older now and have a wise broad perspective on who you want to be and what you do in life Just enjoy your evening in this present moment and the rest of your trip will be as fine Mom and Dad say goodbye and quickly vanish back into the white cloud that passes overhead Thank you for seeing me through this I call out to them I m so glad to be here it s perfect And then I turn to resume tasting my meal Termite Fumigation Treatments The following buildings are scheduled for termite fumigation on August 24 Bayhouse Building 3A 1609 Bayhouse Point Drive Harborhouse Building 17A 1627 Boathouse Circle The following buildings are scheduled for termite fumigation on August 31 Glenhouse Building 6 1716 Glenhouse Drive Treehouse Building 7 1704 Pelican Cove Road Treehouse Building 11 1701 Clower Creek Drive If you have any questions regarding the above scheduled termite fumigations please contact Doug 941 302 8095

10 Flood Insurance For Your Unit Something You Should Know By Gary Gulden You are no doubt aware that our Association is required to obtain flood insurance for our buildings What you may not know though is the extent of the coverage the Association s flood policy provides for damage to the interior of your unit By the terms of the National Flood Insurance Program NFIP our Association s flood insurance covers Building Property which includes in addition to the building and foundation the following unit interior items Electrical and plumbing systems Central air conditioning equipment furnaces and water heaters Refrigerators cooking stoves and built in appliances such as dishwashers Permanently installed carpeting over unfinished flooring Permanently installed paneling wallboard bookcases Kitchen bath and other permanently installed cabinets in their condition as originally constructed Window blinds Debris removal Of course there are many items in your unit that the Association s flood insurance policy does NOT cover among which are Personal Contents and Property such as Your personal belongings such as clothing furniture electronic equipment art Curtains area rugs Portable microwave ovens portable dishwashers clothes washers and dryers The extra cost of upgrades you may have made to the built in kitchen bath and other cabinetry in your unit A reputable insurance broker familiar with condominium insurance should be well aware of all of this and should make sure that any flood insurance you purchase for your unit takes into account what is covered by the Association s policy and does not duplicate that protection But it s important for you to know this too to be certain you are not insuring more of your unit s contents than you intend or need to cover Finally our Association s insurance agent reminds us that the maximum coverage available under NFIP is for 80 of replacement value for our buildings and the unit interior items mentioned above In the very remote case of a total loss of a building due entirely to flood i e no accompanying windstorm damage the insurance proceeds go first to the replacement of the structure Since our maximum coverage is 80 there would not be sufficient funds for replacement of unit interiors That risk is extremely small but needs to be mentioned here AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2015 Important Rules on the Use and Storage of Barbecues and Propane Tanks By Bob Kolk Rules Committee Whether you are full time residents or snowbirds it is extremely important to understand and adhere to the State of Florida s Regulations and Pelican Cove s Rules We Live By on the use and storage of barbecues and propane tanks According to the National Fire Prevention Association 6 000 barbecue fires and explosions occur annually They cause 20 000 injuries and 20 deaths We don t want Pelican Cove to be part of these statistics Florida s Fire and Safety Regulations FFPC 5th ED 2015 which are reflected in our Pelican Cove Rules must be complied with They are pretty straight forward 1 For other than a single or two family dwelling no hibachi gas fired grill charcoal grill shall be used or kindled on any balcony or under any overhanging portion or within ten feet of any multifamily structure Electric Grills are permitted NFPA 1 10 11 6 1 2 The Florida Fire Prevention Code also prohibits the storage or use of L P tanks in quantities greater than 2 1 pounds above the first floor or in any apartment or condominium Therefore L P Propane gas grills 15 pounds tanks cannot be stored on a balcony It is important to note that L P gas cylinders cannot be stored inside the residential unit or anywhere above the first floor inside or outside FFPC 5th ED 2015 So what does that mean for our Pelican Cove barbecue chefs We cannot barbecue on a balcony We must barbecue outside on the ground at least 10 feet from a unit We must store gas grills outside on the ground unless the propane tank is removed or emptied Filled tanks must be stored outside Because of the Hurricane rules we strongly recommend that snowbirds empty burn off their propane tanks before leaving Then the barbecue and tank can be stored anywhere Because of the danger of explosion we also recommend that all gas barbecues be stored on the ground ten feet from a unit Both of these are being considered for Pelican Cove rules If you see any violations of these rules report them to the office Why all the fuss Propane gas is generally safe to use but it can be very explosive if it accumulates in a space and is ignited Propane gas is heavier than air When you open the valve on your barbecue The gas flows into your barbecue Being heavier it pools and settles in the lower portion especially if the lid is down If your igniter quickly lights the fire you are fine If it doesn t you could be in trouble After four or five tries you must turn the valve off and air things out for five minutes to avoid the big bang Always keep the lid open when you start the fire If you have a gas leak into your barbecue the same problem can happen Each time you barbecue raise the lid air it out and smell for rotten eggs If you smell them do not ignite A cigarette can also ignite a propane explosion Be careful The fixtures and lines connecting a propane tank to a barbecue should be checked twice a year for leaks by a Professional By sponging soapy water on the lines and checking for air bubbles It is also good to clean off rust and oil Bon Appetite and be a good 10 foot neighbor
