FEBRUARY 2015 3 President s Post Murray Sherry Board of Directors Committee Meetings Fellow owners I have both good and not so good news for you First the good news All five members of the Board of Directors whose terms expire on February 21 have stepped forward and agreed to run for new terms It has been a harmonious year among the Directors that has led each and every one of them to want to contribute to the running of the Association for another two years Now the not so good news The five members of the Board of Directors whose terms expire on February 21 are the only candidates that put forth their names for election to new two year terms I am disappointed that no new Board candidates stepped forward Committee chairs and longstanding committee members consider Board membership the next time around Committee meetings scheduled for the months of February Check Channels 195 the PC website or the Office for any changes The lack of volunteers extends beyond the Board and includes our committees They also meet monthly usually starting up in October or November and continuing until April or May Most of the ideas of how to improve life in the Cove germinate at the committee level The most impressive recent example was the upgrade of the conference room in the Harbor Club which was completed this past summer There is a new article in this issue of the PC News summarizing what is being discussed at the committee meetings See pg 4 Check it out Buildings Facilities Committee Friday February 6 9 a m Wilbanks Conference Room I recognize that the base of PC volunteers has been lately reduced Over 200 condos have been sold in the past four years A number of these were sold to younger owners who were purchasing for the future and have rented their properties in the interim As for those new owners who bought to become residents it takes time to become involved in the governance of the Association This past year several newer owners have joined one or more of our standing committees This is a good sign and a significant step to getting involved Finance Committee Audit Review Friday February 20 9 30 a m Wilbanks Conference Room A personal note It is time for new blood in the presidency of Pelican Cove Fellow Board members look around you and select your next president from among yourselves Watch Channel 195 For Event Schedule Updates Annual Member Meeting Saturday February 21 10 a m Pelican Pavilion Board Workshop Tuesday February 10 1 30 p m Harbor Club Board of Directors Meeting Tuesday February 17 1 30 p m Pelican Pavilion Bay Water Committee Thursday February 12 9 30 a m Wilbanks Ivy Room Communications Committee Tuesday February 10 9 30 a m Wilbanks Ivy Room Cultural Events Committee Thursday February 12 3 p m Wilbanks Ivy Room Grounds Committee Wednesday February 11 9 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Harbor Committee Wednesday February 4 9 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Planning Committee Thursday February 12 9 30 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Rules Committee Monday February 23 9 30 a m Wilbanks Conference Room

FEBRUARY 2015 10 Kayak and Canoe Club From the Library Frank Rivera Betty Mitchell On Saturday January 10 Pelican Cove Kayakers showed up at the Little Manatee River and made the ten mile run downstream We arrived at the Canoe Outpost at 9 a m and were all loaded onto an old school bus that had to tow a rig full of kayaks and one canoe The bus took us ten miles upstream to our launch site The water was fairly low with a 2 5 mph current Initially this seemed to be an easy paddle but that was a misconception During the heavy summer rains many of the large trees found along the river banks got washed into the river During the fall the Outpost staff use chain saws to cut passages through these tangled obstructions THANK YOU THANK YOU The library staff would like to say a special thank you to Mickey and Marcia Schonberger s family for the more than 11 boxes of beautiful hardcover and paperback books they donated to the Pelican Cove Library We also found old stumps and large limbs left over from last year At each and every obstruction the flow of water tended to speed up and form a spillway A paddler had to stay focused in order to position a kayak for the proper entry into a cut One mistake in this fast moving water ensured that the kayak would get pinned up against a tree stump and then would have to back up out of the current and start all over again At times there were two or three turns one after the other which complicated things It didn t take very long for everyone to learn how to judge the speed and angles to negotiate the obstacles We had lunch on a wide sandy beach that was big enough to haul out 19 kayaks Both banks were full of briar patches with thick thorns This didn t stop several of our crew from climbing through them to collect oranges tangerines and grapefruit that lined the banks returning with their arms full Weather permitting our next paddle will be on Sunday February 8 to Linger Lodge on the Braden River After that we will go to The Spanish Point Marina on Sunday February 28 In addition we received books from John Adler in memory of his wife Viola the family of Barry Cohen donated a huge box of CDs from his extensive music library and a thank you goes to Murry and Leona Brochin for seven boxes of like new hardcover and paperback books they did not have room for in their condo All of the books and CD s are current and in perfect condition All have been sorted and shelved Those for which we did not have room were donated to either the Friends of the Library at Gulf Gate or Goodwill Industries for their book store on Clark Road We are very grateful for the variety of all the books donated and know the residents of Pelican Cove will enjoy their generosity for some time to come A Notice for Our 1st Time Residents Only the DVD s and VCR s need to be signed out for a 3 day limit on the one disc items There is no sign out for books and no time limit for returns Magazines should be returned as soon as possible as notes have been left by some residents requesting prompt returns Book returns do not need to be shelved just put them in the wooden box under the sign out sheet for movies Donations of six books or less can be put in the black basket next to the desk and wall MOVIE NIGHT Earl Kaplan New Owners Welcome Two movie nights this month Sunday February 1 and Sunday February 15 at 7 p m at the Pelican Pavilion Watch for more information on Channel 195 or the PC website www pelicancovecondo com Movie Nights are open to all residents and are sponsored by the PC Social Club Thursday March 5 4 30 p m in the Wilbanks New Owners February 2015 NEWCOMER Marshall Marian Raser UNIT TR138 FROM CITY STATE COUNTRY Pittsfield MA 01201
