FEBRUARY 2018 3 President s Post By Bill McKay This is my final post I have been involved in Pelican Cove governance for the past four years two years as treasurer one as vice president and this year as president and it is time to go Much to my surprise I have had a really enjoyable time The good times far outweighed the bad This has been possible because we have a very competent staff and a lot of owners who care about this special place and invest their time and energy in it Whoever becomes the next board president has a great starting position This is not to say however that all is wonderful in paradise There are some areas in which we could make significant improvements Board of Directors Committee Meetings BOD Committee meetings scheduled for the month of February Check Channel 195 the PC website or the office for any changes Annual Member Meeting Saturday February 17 10 a m Pelican Pavilion Board Workshop Tuesday February 6 9 30 a m Harbor Club Volunteering for worthwhile activities I am not a very social person and I do not know many of the residents in our 731 units So the other day I joined up with a group of residents who were taking down the Christmas lights these same people put up lights on the poles a month before I looked around and thought That s odd I know everyone here However I should not have thought it odd since there is a pretty small group of people who do most of the things that keep our community humming Every time I go to an event or function the same people are working there They participate in the committees or clubs and groups they work on the Employee Appreciation Fund they organize the events that people enjoy At some point in time these folks move on Who takes their place The answer is you do Everyone owes some time and effort to help their community move forward If you have not yet taken your turn then you need to step up There certainly are plenty of opportunities Board of Directors Meeting Tuesday February 13 9 30 a m Harbor Club Being a good citizen Traditionally at the annual meeting we give awards to two residents who have performed outstanding service for the Cove Right now I am considering who those recipients should be There are a lot of folks here who deserve such an honor These folks are polite willing to take on a task give more than they take and are genuinely nice people They are the ones you picture in your mind when you hear the term good citizen The sad thing is these folks do not get much attention Attention and energy often goes to the small minority who take but never give who think that rules are to be obeyed by everyone but themselves who complain but do nothing to resolve the problem These folks take up a lot of time and this board president has met more than a few of them I wish I or someone else had the skills or ability to convert them to the good citizen type but I long ago decided it was not going to be So if you are one of the good citizens and I have not personally thanked you for all the work you have done at Pelican Cove then my apologies I was probably allowing myself to get annoyed when I should have been thanking you Thank all you good citizens Communications Committee Monday February 5 9 30 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Information Box Located outside the PC Office This box contains A property map Work Order forms the Monthly Calendar PC University Schedule lists of Units for Sale and Lease and a copy of the Rules We Live By This information and more can also be found on our website at pelicancovecondo com Bay Water and Environmental Committee Friday February 9 9 30 a m Wilbanks Ivy Room Buildings and Facilities Committee Friday February 2 9 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Cultural Events Committee Thursday February 8 3 p m Wilbanks Ivy Room Finance Committee Wednesday February 14 1 p m Wilbanks Conference Room Grounds Committee Wednesday February 14 9 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Harbor Committee Wednesday February 7 9 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Planning Committee Thursday February 8 9 30 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Rules Committee Monday February 12 9 30 a m Wilbanks Conference Room

FEBRUARY 2018 5 Manager s Report By Jack Stevens General Manager The first month of 2018 was very busy Our staff committees and board have been finalizing plans that were developed over the last year and starting talks about upcoming needs of the Cove The most noticeable activity is the area along our main road that separates us from Bay Village Many are talking about the main road and the removal of the Australian Pines that survived last year s storm These trees were not only susceptible to being knocked over by wind but are an aggressive invasive species When deciding how to replant the large area that fell during Irma we had to address the fact that Australian Pines do not allow other plants to live in their environment With this in mind we had two choices leave the area as it was and allow the existing pines to slowly repopulate or remove the invasive trees so that we could replant in a manner that is environmentally friendly Since leaving a large hole in our canopy was not an option the invasive tress and their roots were removed to allow new plantings in the coming months So where are we headed Last month the board reviewed conceptual drawings from our landscape architect for the native plants and trees that are proposed to restore the area and create a buffer between us and the large Bay Village building We have also met with the management of Bay Village to discuss additional plantings that they will be installing on their property to support our buffer Our current plan includes many large canopy trees along the road and in the forest as well as numerous palms and a variety of understory plantings The end result of this project will provide an instant native forested area that will mature into a stand of 40 canopy trees over the next ten years I hope that a final plan can be approved at the February board meeting so that this large scale landscaping project can be underway by the middle of this year This is a very active time of year for all residents and as such we keep our staff hopping to keep up with work requests and seeing to it that our numerous activities can occur With all this activity we continue to make progress on maintenance items including carpentry repairs and painting throughout the community and in the Brookhouses In addition the plans to clear Clower Creek improve the Bay Point kayak launch area replace the carpeting in the Wilbanks and many other needed steps to keep PC in good shape for the future are well underway Our annual meeting is this month on Saturday February 17 After the meeting we will seat five new board members and of course hold our annual picnic I hope to see many of you there Reminders Don t Run on Docks Remind your visiting guests friends that running or jogging on the docks is not allowed The docks are not built for running and can be dangerous when wet The dock walkway is a very popular area for walking this time of year which is encouraged However no running please Posting Events Make sure you give a copy of your flyer to the administrator in the PC office That is the best way to guarantee it goes on our TV Channel 195 and the PC website You can post your flyer 7 days prior to your event but please remove outdated flyers promptly Pool Reminders This is a very busy time of year for pool and spa usage Residents are asked to remind their guests to obey all of the associated rules i e wearing cover ups to and from the pool no jumping or running around the pool etc Remember that children under the age of 12 must be supervised by a parent or designated guardian at all times For health reasons state law prohibits children under the age of 12 from using the spa even when adults are present Finally you may have noticed that all pools are fenced Please take your time when opening and closing the gates They are breakable To open the gate you must pull up on the knob before pushing or pulling it open

FEBRUARY 2018 12 Social Club Activities By Lea Buschgans The Pelican Cove Social Club continues to host fun activities for residents and their guests But January s party was bittersweet for our long time members It was the first time in many years that Ro Forgie was not there As one of the original members and treasurer since 2010 Ro was a pillar of the Social Club Her absence was noted by all and we will all miss her greeting us at our events Watch for an article and photo on the January Hoedown in the next issue In the meantime mark your calendars for our next party on Sunday February 25 It is still in the planning stages so if you have any great ideas or would like to volunteer please contact our planner Annette Zaffiro at 440 449 1395 A gentle reminder Annual dues of 15 are due Thanks to all of you who have already paid This fact became very obvious the week of December 5 2017 We reluctantly left our condo community The Philadelphian in Philadelphia to come to Pelican Cove in Sarasota where the weather was warm and balmy in contrast to Philadelphia where the weather was predicted to be icy and snowy It felt as if we had never left Florida The warm and friendly greetings of all our friends as well as the staff felt wonderful both personal and welcoming from the front gate to the office This continuity was reinforced since we decided to spend the day exactly as we would up north imagining that we were still up there We began the morning with chair yoga and went swimming in the afternoon This was topped off by a fine film in the evening We inhabit two bits of heaven and for this we are certainly grateful Navigating the PC Website By Erlinda Rejino Website use is steadily increasing Two features get heavy use this time of the year the message board and the Wilbanks reservations Both are works in progress modified and improved as usage informs The message board has three levels categories topics and messages Categories General Sports and Fitness etc are created by the website administration Topics Yoga Let s go paddling etc may be created by residents but can only be deleted by a request to pcwebsitereview gmail com or are deleted after 90 days Messages may be posted and deleted by residents Dan and Felice Perlmutter A Tale of Two Condos By Felice Perlmutter How lucky can we be We live in and love our two condos one in Philadelphia and one in Sarasota And they have proven themselves almost to be identical as we experience and enjoy them So let me count the ways The Philadelphian and Pelican Cove are twins First and foremost is the population in each place educated interesting curious and informed Second is the various programs offered so it is possible to stay on campus all the time Third is the beauty of the place and the convenience of the surroundings And last but not least is the sense of community that people care A Classified category has been added to the Message Board with the topics For Sale Freebies Need Give a Ride and Community Resource Info This allows residents to post a message with their information and remove that message when their request is addressed The aim is to keep the message board current by putting residents in control of their postings The Wilbanks reservation process currently requires three steps 1 Check the calendar to see if the desired date is available 2 Complete the reservation form on line and submit it 3 Upon contact by office staff complete arrangements for payment and finalize Submission of the on line request does not guarantee the reservation as paper submissions also occur The message you receive upon submission is simply an acknowledgement that your request is received Please send your thoughts and insights to pecwebsitereview gmail com

FEBRUARY 2018 Tips and How Tos How to Help Prevent Water Damage in Your Condo By Eric Stackowicz The last thing anyone wants is a flooded condo or house whether or not they have insurance I was in the heating and air conditioning field for over thirty years and I personally have seen several homes destroyed unnecessarily One was from rubber washing machine hoses that burst while the home owners were on vacation and flooded the home A simple fix like replacing them with stainless steel hoses would have prevented this loss If you think you can t afford to make these changes you really can t afford not to Three major causes of flooded units are Washing machine hoses bursting Remedy is easy Replace rubber hoses with stainless hoses for about 20 00 available at Lowes or Home Depot Air conditioner flooding Remedy is moderate Have your HVAC contractor install a wet switch in your return air switch This will shut down the unit instantly when water is detected on the floor The switch is less than 50 00 plus installation Also have them flush your AC drain with white vinegar This prevents mold from building up and causing a clog which can lead to leaks Water heater leaking Remedy moderate Have a certified plumber install a Flood Stop Part OFS 3 4 NPT purchased at Ferguson Supply This unit installs on the cold supply line and water inlet to the water heater When water is sensed this will hold water in tank Like holding your thumb over a straw full of water Cost is approximately 150 00 plus installation This is an easy install if done when a water heater is replaced Water heaters have a service life of 10 years after which they have a high probability of failing Additional Recommendations for Saving Money Consider a 30 gallon water heater when replacing your water heater It s less water to heat works great for up to 4 people gives you more space We don t need large capacity water heaters in condos Most of us have 1 2 people in our condos Newer dishwashers washing machines and showerheads are more efficient than older models 13 Pelican Cove Yacht Club By Sally Billington For all Pelican Cove residents who have a power boat sail boat kayak or canoe you are invited to join the Pelican Cove Yacht Club The purpose of the club is to enjoy our own harbor and the wonderful waters surrounding Pelican Cove as well as the camaraderie of those interested in boating PCYC has a monthly rendezvous at various locations as well as safety and other programs focused on boating The lunch meetings are generally held at restaurants and yacht clubs that are accessible by boat but many members also come by car Members also enjoy a February and a holiday cocktail party PCYC sponsors the annual lighting of the harbor and the fleet for all residents to enjoy Our February rendezvous will be held in the Harbor Club on February 10 at 5 30 p m and will be catered For more information or a membership application contact Den McCrumb dennis mccrumb wmich edu or Sally Billington pcycsec aol com Committee Doings from page 4 The Harbor Rules violation involving an unseaworthy boat was referred to the board for action Improvements to the Bayhouse Point storage and launch area were reviewed and approved for submission to the board at its next meeting A test of different lighting options around the harbor will be conducted to reduce glare while improving visibility for boaters and walkers at night Owner s views about a floating platform for small craft will be solicited via the forthcoming PC Survey Planning The committee s agenda included discussions of the recent Committee Expo and reports of work underway on the PC Survey the Annual Plan update and the Long Range Planning Subcommittee Finance The two principal items on the committee s agenda were a review of preliminary 2017 year end financial results and a review of the committee s charter as required annually Preliminary financial results show that the Association is currently projected to finish the year with an operating surplus A subcommittee was formed to review the charter in detail and present its recommendations at the February meeting
