FEBRUARY 2019 Manager s Report By Jack Stevens General Manager There is never a lack of things for residents to do at Pelican Cove January saw the beginnings of Pelican Cove University s full schedule cultural performances kicking in for the season more exercise classes than ever before crowded tennis and pickleball courts and more interest in many other events and activities In fact we are so active that finding proper space to hold all of our activities has reached the point where it is obvious that a new approach is needed This is a good problem as it is an absolute indicator that even as we start to plan for next year s 40th anniversary Pelican Cove is still a thriving and growing community Our committees the Board and management staff are actively working on solutions to keep up with the demands of this vibrant community As part of this work our Planning Committee has visited other associations to see how they meet their needs There were two items from these visits that stood out and add to our challenge The first thing they noted was that no other community has the same diversity and volume of activities offered to their residents In addition they were reminded of the unique qualities of Pelican Cove s facilities and the value this brings to the overall experience of living here The committee is working on finding ways to meet our needs without reducing the opportunities or diminishing what we have by trying to fit a cookie cutter mold This is a process that will include community input to identify the needs and desires of everyone and how to best meet the demand I know they are working on a date for a March forum on this subject Resolving space issues is just a small piece of what we are accomplishing and planning Our staff continues to not only maintain the property but find ways to do it more efficiently while improving what we have Most notable in January was the beginning of our large scale tree pruning project which has been completed in the Glenhouse neighborhood and is wrapping up work in the Bayhouses This has resulted in the removal of truckloads of deadwood and will pay off for Pelican Cove for decades to come by creating healthier trees and reducing the threat to our buildings posed by large overhanging limbs Supporting all of these activities and accomplishments requires not only the hard work of talented individuals but financial strength I am happy to report that once again we have closed out the last year with a budget surplus and all of our operating accounts are at capacity We have many very 5 talented individuals both on staff and as resident volunteers and are in a great financial position to continue to prosper as a community Second Annual Safe Medicine Disposal Day Monday February 25 1 30 to 3 30 p m Harbor Club Sponsored by the Bay Water and Environmental Committee Dispose of your medications safely and conveniently Bring your pills your creams your liquids and your medications and dispose of them in our Deterra Bags which will neutralize the active ingredients in your pills Come early before we run out of cookies Pelican Cove Is Turning 40 By Jean Corigliano At the end of 1979 Pelican Cove made the final transition from ownership by the developers to the Condominium Association we have today It s time to celebrate We are looking for volunteers to help plan a 40th year celebration to take place in conjunction with the Annual Meeting in February 2020 We have ideas and materials from prior year s celebrations If you would like to get involved please contact Brian Baxter or Jean Corigliano We need you Annual Meeting Reminder Saturday February 16 10 a m in Pelican Pavilion Don t Forget Your BLUE Proxy form is due in the PC Office prior to the Annual Meeting Annual Picnic The Annual Picnic will be at noon following the Annual Meeting outside the Wilbanks Tickets at 10 per person MUST be purchased in advance at the PC Office by Tuesday February 12 The menu includes a choice of a pulled chicken sandwich a sliced beef brisket sandwich or a black bean vegetarian burger plus penne pasta salad coleslaw vegetarian smoked beans fresh fruit cookies brownies and beverages

10 Meet Your Neighbor Lois Kastner By Donna Anderson The Fort Leavenworth sponsor has the main responsibility to get the officer settled including helping him or her open a bank account find housing rent furniture get a driver s license find a car to buy and anything else to get them settled So reads the current description of Lois and David Kastner sponsors for the Command and General Staff College CGSC International Military Student Division in Ft Leavenworth Kansas So too it must have read when Lois Kastner was approached to become a family liaison team member for international students and families arriving at the graduate school some 20 years ago She and her husband David embraced the challenge and began a period of serving and bonding with people across the globe that continues today Being a good will ambassador is a natural fit for Lois A military brat with fond memories of that life she was born in Panama grew up in Germany and studied internationally With a BA in Interior Design her first gig was in palace design in Washington D C It included projects for some of the Saudi royal families This was a huge opportunity It taught me respect for cultural perimeters When the Kastners relocated to Frankfort Kentucky Lois opened her own consulting business Professional Design Associates She later moved it to Winter Park Florida where they lived for 18 years Through the American Society of International Design ASID Lois became instrumental in creating state licensing for professional regulations in Florida one of the first states in the country to do so The bulk of her work however has been in restoration preservation and adaptive reuse As they say the greenest building is one that already exists She has received numerous awards for her work in both Kentucky and Florida A third generation Rotarian Lois spent several years involved in humanitarian work in Panama It included the introduction of clean water school kitchens and medical clinics as well as the supplies needed for each another award winning achievement Finally Lois s passion as a photographer was born the Christmas Day of her sixth year when Santa left a little camera under the Christmas tree From that day forward the chance to document her travels and experiences as well as those of others became an automatic reflex It has brought her much joy FEBRUARY 2019 Fifteen years ago Lois closed her business and the Kastners moved to Kansas to be closer to family They found a home near Ft Leavenworth and Lois found a part time job on base As they say the rest is history The families under their sponsorship arrived and David and Lois met them at the airport with welcome baskets signs and balloons It was kind of a big deal Though David still worked Lois gave up her day job to make time for their international flock She helped them look for housing options furnishings and schools She took them to medical appointments car shopping found them winter clothing usually reclaimed etc She could be available at a moment s notice and was often the one called to pick up a sick child from school or bring them a change of clothing Most of the moms didn t drive so she taught several women to man the wheel on their own Almost anything you can imagine we ve encountered We became their family and they became ours At every event for the women and for the officers Lois had her camera ready At school plays at the children s sporting events she created a chronology of life in America and put it on line so that the extended families back home could see their loved ones were safe and happy I could easily take 2500 pictures every few days Thus whether calling on professional volunteer or leisure time skills Lois s background came into play I couldn t have done everything I did without David s support It took both of us We both received the benefits for sure When she thinks back on what the US International relationship means Lois remembers reports from American officers who learned more from their international colleagues than the foreign students learned from them By being together one on one perspectives on our country are exchanged and appreciated A lot of people want to say America s a dirty word around the world but you talk to these people who ve spent a year here and you see the other side of the story As an American that s something I m very proud about I guess my path was set at birth born overseas growing up in Europe working with international clients doing humanitarian work a love for travel and other cultures and the gift of a little Argus camera when I was six yearsold perhaps all in preparation for the wonderful world of sponsorship of our International Officers and their families Lois will be presenting a Coffee Program on the CGSC graduate school and their international program Thursday March 14 entitled We are the World A Focus on Global Connections Pavilion doors open at 9 30 a m for coffee The program begins at 10 a m Come hear her story first hand
