JANUARY 2015 7 Rajko Hungarian Gypsy Orchestra to Perform Pelican Programs Libby Ross and Felice Perlmutter January has started with a bang and our traditional opening program featuring Jerry Bilik starts the Pelican Programs season Going to the circus is always a blast and with Jerry at the helm it is a double blast Be sure to join us for an evening of fun at the Pelican Pavilion on Monday January 5 at 8 p m It will give our new season much to crow about And cheer about Navajo Rug On Tuesday January 20 at 8 p m in the Harbor Club Harriet Gayle well known to Pelican Cove for her excellent presentations on the plantings in our gardens will present The Navajo Nation Its Art and Culture Harriet will present the belief systems medicinal practices as well as an in depth look at the wonderful Navajo rugs It promises to be an interesting evening In early February we are thrilled to present one of Sarasota s finest theatre companies Thanks to a generous foundation grant The Odyssey Theatre will come to Pelican Cove Pelican Programs will offer an unusual evening with presentations of original 10 minute plays written performed and directed by local playwrights actors and directors Live theatre and fast moving performances on Monday February 2 in the Pelican Pavilion at 8 p m Don t miss it On a more philosophical level our sobering program on Drones has been rescheduled for Tuesday February 17 8 p m at the Harbor Club Sidney Axinn Professor Emeritus Temple University who has written and presented extensively on the subject will explore the ethical implications of the use of Drones He will be interviewed by Dan Perlmutter Professor Emeritus University of Pennsylvania with a focus on the layman s need to know As always we look forward to your attendance and your interesting questions and comments See you at Pelican Programs Joel Leonard As part of the Cultural Events Concerts the world famous Rajko Orchestra will Pelican Cove Cultural Concerts be appearing at the Pelican Pavilion on Monday January 26 and offering a unique musical experience Although the orchestra may have many members in its home country it is convenient for them to perform their international tours with fewer musicians The troupe coming to Pelican Cove will consist of seven highly skilled musicians singers and dancers Each musician has been rigorously trained at the legendary Rajko Music School in Budapest Hungary The school together with the orchestra was established in the mid 20th Century and it specifically recruited talented young persons with Roma backgrounds and trained them in the traditions of Central European Gypsy style music However the students also received a classical music training shaping them to be exceptional performers Rajko means young Roma The singers dancers are soloist members of the HungarOperett company This organization provides high level operetta training in voice dance and drama The instruments you will see on the stage of the Pavilion will consist of two violins clarinet cimbalom and double bass The lead violinist will be Lorin Danyl who is the leader of the Budapest Rajko Orchestra The cimbalom is a concert quality equivalent of the hammered dulcimer the cimbalist is one of the finest performers in Hungary The two singers include one of the founders of the HungarOperett company Peter Kollar Erik and the enchanting Eva Gats another soloist with the company The incredible range of their repertoire covers many genres from classical to folk music and from operettas to gypsy music You will be sure to recognize a number of the classical pieces including the Hungarian Dances of Brahms and Hungarian Rhapsody of Liszt the gypsy selections with their spontaneity and improvisation may have you dancing in the aisles The ensembles of the Rajko Orchestra have appeared in almost every country in the world and we are privileged to have them grace our stage at Pelican Cove The performance will start at 8 p m Tickets will be distributed in the Pavilion lobby the day of the performance between 1 p m and 3 p m and at 7 p m Doors will open at 7 30 p m

JANUARY 2015 8 Art Show PC Yacht Club News For writers performers and visual artists of all kinds Pelican Cove is where we can express ourselves in a supportive and stimulating environment The non artists or art appreciators recognize how much they benefit from living in such a creative milieu In fact everyone here acknowledges the incredible wealth of artistic talent that so greatly enhances our quality of life What a fun evening we all had on the night of the Lighting of the Harbor and Fleet Despite the cool weather many bundled up PCers came down to watch the show The harbor looked beautiful Shortly after the lights were turned on music started to play Here Comes Santa Claus was heard then Rudolph followed by the other eight reindeer pulling Santa proceeded to come through the harbor They toured around the harbor to everyone s delight Thanks to Frank Rivera for his creative idea and to his kayakers who pulled it off Jane Freund Sally Billington The Pelican Cove Art Show celebrates the important role that art plays in our community and showcases the work of our visual artists who make it happen To be held this year from Saturday March 14 to Monday March 16 the show always draws large crowds to the Pelican Pavilion and Harbor Club where gallery spaces are specially created for the three day event It is a gala weekend kicked off by an artists reception Friday evening at The Wilbanks and the show s opening day Saturday where the wine flows and cookie trays overflow Donna Frank Anderson Jim Russell MaryAnn Horton Photo by George Andrade Art Show 2014 Photo by Arlene Bluestein Last year more than 130 artists exhibited their pieces in these categories ceramics collage crafts digital images drawing fiber jewelry mixed media painting photography sculpture stained glass and woodworking Owners renters and staff may submit two works of original art each in this non juried show Glicee prints are okay however no other copies or reproductions of original work will be accepted Back by popular demand from 2013 art studio tours will be an exciting feature of this year s show This will be a one day event on Saturday when visitors will enjoy behind the scenes tours at studios of the Art Photography continued on page 14 The lighted and decorated boats were judged by John Hilficker The results are First place MaryAnn owned by Jeff Horton Second place 2 the Max owned by Jim Russell Third place Coda owned by Donna Frank Anderson Honorable Mention Friend Ship owned by Alberto DiMillo Prizes were boat bags donated by Harbour Bags Thanks to all who decorated their boat Yacht Club members later enjoyed a pizza party at the Harbor Club where Frank Anderson was elected as the Commodore for 2015 Happy New Year

JANUARY 2015 11 PC Jazz Combo Bob Miller Norman Scotch Sculpture Wanda Darlington Jazz is Just Around the Corner at the Pavilion every Thursday night beginning January 8 The downbeat will once again be at 7 30 p m in response to favorable comments from residents and musicians While the name of the group implies strictly jazz the PC Combo plays a wide variety of music for both listening and dancing Doug Barton and Marcia Wolfson The group has a long history dating to l980 when a group of jazz lover residents gathered to listen and to discuss music Those with instruments started and enjoyed playing for themselves With Stan Hendricks at the helm soon others came to listen and the Combo became a regular seasonal Thursday night event Bob Howland and Dave Farr kept the music flowing after Stan s death Because of donations of residents the Combo has been able to continue through the years The exhibit will take place on Saturday January 24 from 1 4 p m in the garden area behind the Harbor Club Now under the direction of Bobby Barnhardt the Combo is composed of Sarasota musicians You can expect to see Johnny Moore back on drums John DeWitt on bass and Tim Eaton on trumpet Keith Carmen will be the pianist for the group Dave Farr former leader of the PC Combo will again be the featured vibe player An addition to the front line is trombonist Marvin Luckett who is well known in our area Instrumentalist Joel Leonard vocalists Sam Kaplan and I are Pelican Cove residents that add their talents to the group Plan to join us at 7 30 p m in the Pelican Pavilion starting January 8 and on each following Thursday evening MOVIE NIGHT Earl Kaplan Two movie nights this month Sunday January 4 and Sunday January 18 at 7 p m at the Pelican Pavilion Watch for more information on Channel 195 or the PC website www pelicancovecondo com Movie Nights are open to all residents and are sponsored by the PC Social Club These movie night performances were originated by the late Mickey Schonberger Candidates Night scheduled for Tuesday January 20 at 7 p m in the Pelican Pavilion Pelican Cove Sculpture Club is hosting a retrospective memorial sculpture exhibit for two of our special members who died recently Bob was our coordinator and the spirit of the club and Norm was a long time valued member Please join us in a toast honoring Bob and Norm From the Library Betty Mitchell By now Pelican Cove residents for the most part are here to enjoy this beautiful community The library would like to thank everyone who has contributed books magazines and videos to the library this summer The staff would especially like to thank David and Ann Triggle who have been so generous in their donations Please note that the DVDs and VCRs have been moved from their present location to the end caps of the cases where the mystery paperback books were located The mystery paperback books have been moved to where the hardback mystery books are located Hopefully this will solve some of the confusion Now all the mystery and fiction books both hardback and paperback books are together in their respective coves You will notice that in the back corner of the library there are a few games puzzles and limited books on other topics As a reminder we do not have room for self help books but welcome both paperback and hardback in likenew condition in the following categories Non Fiction Biography Large Print Mystery and Fiction We no longer accept VCR movie tapes as we expand our library with DVD movies and television series recordings Duplicates etc are donated to Friends of the Library at Gulf Gate or to Goodwill for their resale Please remember to return books and DVDs to the library so that others may use them THANK YOU
