Electronic Voting: Early in 2015, a Florida statute was passed permitting associations to offer electronic online voting to their members who would prefer to vote and/or receive ofcial notices by those means. At its November meeting, a resolution authorizing such an electronic voting option was presented, discussed and tabled until this meeting pending legal opinion about one of the clauses in the resolution. That resolution was brought back for discussion, and the Board, being satised with the requested legal opinion, approved it. This action simply permits the association to offer owners the option of voting and receiving ofcial notices by electronic mail. By itself, this resolution neither obligates the association to provide this option, nor owners to use it if it is offered. If the association chooses to make such an option available it will need to enter into a board-approved separate contract with an independent provider of electronic voting service and provide information and consent forms to all owners so that they may enroll in the service, if they wish to.Casualty Insurance Renewal The insurance policy that insures our buildings and carports against damage from wind, re, and other perils, apart from ood, comes up for renewal each December. Each year, our insurance agent solicits proposals from the marketplace of insurance carriers who write casualty policies for a complex of our size, age, and location, and presents the best offering for our consideration. Owing to the comparatively low incidence of major claims from disaster events worldwide, and the abundance of investor capital owing into the insurance marketplace, our renewal premiums were once more slightly lower than the previous year’s costs. It is held over three days and in two different places. The dates are Saturday, March 11, Sunday, March 12, and Monday, March 13. Forms for submitting work will be available at the ofce on Wednesday, January 4, and must be returned to the ofce no later than Friday, February 17. This is the time of our year when there are so many programs and activities on the Pelican Cove calendar that we are spoiled for choice and nd ourselves wishing there were more hours in a day to t them all in. We are truly blessed with such an amazing array of offerings – brought to us by a large corps of dedicated, talented, generous, and equally amazing volunteers. Hats off, and thanks to you all for everything you do to make this such a uniquely stimulating place to live. We will be holding our Annual Meeting in a little more than a month, and with it, our election of directors. A strong board is of vital importance to our association, and there are four seats to be lled this year. Please consider standing as a candidate for a term as a director. The deadline for submitting your candidacy is Monday, January 9, 2017, at 5 p.m. “Intent to Run” forms are available at the ofce, on line, or as an insert in last month’s PC News. The Annual Meeting also marks the time when some of the seats on our standing committees turn over as certain members’ terms are up. These committees are the heart of our governance system and equally as important to the strength of this association as is the Board. The meeting schedules of these committees are published in each month’s PC News and on our website, their agendas are prominently posted, and they are open to all. I urge you to attend the meetings of committees whose responsibilities interest you, and, provided you are an owner, make your interest in becoming a member known to their chairs. Of note among our committees’ work is an effort underway for the past year in the Planning Committee to develop a long-range plan for Pelican Cove’s infrastructure. A public forum to obtain resident input to that project is scheduled for Thursday, January 5, 2017, at 10 a.m. in the Pelican Pavilion. Please make plans to attend. 4JANUARY 2017Committee DoingsBay & Water Environmental Committee – December 8 Meeting was held at 9:30 a.m. in the Wilbanks with a quorum. • Old business involved changing the committee’s name, question raised that committee’s mission statement and name change might be in conict. Vote was tabled.• Discussed Climate Change Study and need for more involvement in providing input to Mr. Beever. Ewa will attend climate study subcommittee meeting next Monday.• Two guests arrived, Willard Block with Jennifer Schaeffer of the Science and Environment Council. • This is a collaborative council of 30 organizations representing scientic research in Sarasota and Manatee Counties.Building & Facilities Committee – December 1 Window coverings for Pavilion is an ongoing project awaiting quotes and proposals. Owner requested dumpster be moved at Bldg#1531 to existing parking space – it was recommended that Doug get a better estimate of costs involved, and B&F members go to look at area involved. It was suggested cost should be absorbed by owners involved in that area. To be delayed until 1/6/17 meeting. Sewer pipe issues are an ongoing discussion. We have had one area done recently with a video before and after, and another area to be done soon. No conclusive evidence yet that we must take a denite action. This is an issue requiring attention on an individual basis at this time, although it will need some long term planning to avoid major costs in a short term. LED lighting proposal was further discussed and it was determined we need more proposals for the board. Pickle ball was also brought up as something becoming very popular but not necessary for B&F to be involved with at this time. May go to rules committee in the future. Further action tabled at this time. Carport roof replacements were discussed and will be addressed by the Planning Committee for future consideration. Safety doors with panic bars are being evaluated for the Pavilion and we are awaiting three proposals. Finance Committee – November 16 The Finance Committee had a very brief meeting; there was no old business. The only new business was to review the October nancials. Pelican Cove continues to be in very good nancial shape. Harbor Committee – December 7 The chair spoke of Dan Alger and his contributions to Pelican Cove and to the Harbor Committee. He announced that there will be a memorial to Dan at the Harbor Club from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 17. Harbor Chair had discussion with the chair of Planning Committee - they discussed challenges of administration of Harbor issues. Chair discussed climate change and issues to be brought to Mr. Beever’s attention. He also drafted a letter to Mr. Beever and wants the committee to review letter prior to sending. An owner suggested putting decorated kayaks in vacant slips for the duration of Holiday Harbor Lights. HC approved with conditions that no electrical connections be allowed to touch the water and that dock lines are secured to allow rise and fall with tide. Kayaks can remain in slips from the day of Harbor Lighting of the Fleet till Saturday after the New Year. Administration reports 35 boat and 3 kayak rack slips open. There are 11 people on the waiting list and 11 on the move list. Boat slip #19 will be cleaned this week, #14 is in process of cleaning. Boat in slip #3 was reported as derelict but examination showed it was not. David Schowalter discussed kayak training “getting back into kayaks after falling out.” Yacht Club reports that Holiday Harbor Lights will go on at 5 p.m. on Friday, December 16. A Yacht Club pizza party will follow at the Harbor Club. Further discussion with county on Clower Creek weirs will await Mr. Beever’s report. Committee members will let chair know if they intend to stay on the committee. Committee discussed, in depth, modications of Rules We Boat By. John Tichener reported on Harbor safety.Planning Committee – December 1 Planning Committee intends to present their Master Plan at the Annual Meeting in February. Majority of the meeting was devoted to planning the Community Forum scheduled for Thursday, January 5, 2017. Chairman Baxter will do a power point presentation of the plan; then community members can review specic plan components at separate tables manned by committee members. 5JANUARY 2017Manager’s ReportBy Jack Stevens, General Manager With the new year just begun there are a couple of things already happening. Our at roof project is scheduled to begin January 17. We will be starting with the building located at 1526 Pelican Point Drive and completing work on 1520/1518 Pelican Point Drive, 1633 Boathouse Circle, and 1508 Pelican Cove Road by early April. In addition, we are installing new radio frequency gate controls at the main gate and anticipate this system being operational by the end of this month. This system will allow owners to have automatic access to the property. We are always looking forward in order to better maintain the property and avoid unnecessary costs. One area we are working on is a plan for funding and addressing our aging underground sewer system. The main sewer lines for many units representing each of our neighborhoods have been inspected, jetted clear, and videoed. This work was done not only to reduce back-ups from known problem areas, but to gather a better understanding of the condition of our existing pipes. The good news is that the pipes we cleaned were in better shape than we had expected. We will continue addressing problem areas, which will add to our understanding of the condition of our underground pipes, while we plan for our future needs. In addition to addressing the sewer mains, our buildings maintenance crews completed painting the stairs and front entries to the Grovehouse buildings located at 1508, 1512, and 1516 Pelican Cove Road; began structural repairs to the Brookhouse building located at 1680 Brookhouse Circle; completed the structural repairs and painting of the Brookhouse building located at 1705 Clower Creek Drive; repaired several stairs, structural posts and decks around the property; removed and completely rebuilt rear decks on units located at 1677 Brookhouse Circle and 1701 Clower Creek Drive; removed and replaced the concrete window sill to a unit at 1519 Pelican Point Drive; replaced roughly 40’ of the boardwalk between 1519 and 1525 Pelican Point Drive, as well as the boardwalk leading to the Brookhouse pool; repaired the side of the storage area located near 1505 Pelican Point Drive; replaced a pump motor for the Pavilion pool; and started painting the stucco areas of the Bayhouse buildings. In grounds maintenance, we completed the trimming, edging, and raking of the Grovehouses, both Treehouse neighborhoods, the Brookhouses and Glenhouses, and are nearing completion of the Bayhouses; we added new plantings around the Far Harbor pool; had the large pond in the Brookhouses cleaned; installed Poinsettias around the property; removed several failing trees around the property, and replanted in the areas where they were removed. We are moving our operating account from Iberia to Florida Communities Bank. Everyone should have received their coupon books. If you have not received your books please let the ofce know.

6JANUARY 2017Stan Hendricks Jazz Concert SeriesBy Bobby Barnhardt Opening its 17th season, the Stan Hendricks Jazz Concert Series is proud to present The Eddie Metz, Jr. Jazz Trio. This trio, also known as “The International Trio”, brings to us “An Evening of Swingin’ Jazz” featuring classic jazz tunes and selections from the Great American Songbook. The trio is comprised of three veterans, all from different continents, although all three now make their homes in the U.S. Drummer Eddie Metz has played with a host of famous leaders, including Count Basie, Clark Terry, Tommy Newman, Chick Corea, Arturo Sandoval and Woody Herman, and worked with such greats as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Sammy Davis Jr., Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein and Patti Page. He continues to record with top jazz artists and performs at jazz festivals and events around the country with a home base in Orlando, Florida. Bassist/Vocalist Nicki Parrott has taken her adopted homeland by storm since arriving from Australia, recording a Pelican Cove UniversityBy Alice Levine The Pelican Cove University Committee is gearing up for the start of classes on Wednesday, January 4, 2017. Our rst class will be Robert Rothstein’s “Running on Empty: Failure of Global Governance” at 10 a.m. in the Pavilion. Most classes will be held in the Pavilion this season, except for Thursdays, when three discussion classes will be at the Harbor Club. In the morning at 10 a.m. will be Lou Levitt’s “Making a Difference in Inuencing Public Policy.” In the afternoon Laura Shulman’s “Contemporary Short Stories” will alternate with Toby Cosin, who is returning to teach “Great Books: Short Stories.” All of this will be explained at our Expo on Tuesday morning, January 3, beginning at 10 a.m. We are offering 19 courses this year and we expect all, or most, of the instructors will be on NEWCOMER UNIT FROM: CITY, STATE/COUNTRYDennis & Susan Gormely BA101 Riverside, CT 06878New Owners hand to give a brief description of their courses. The University Committee is very sad to announce the death of our chairperson, JoEllen DeMarco. We are working hard to duplicate all of the things that she did for our community and to try and have the university run as smoothly as it did under her able guidance. Alice Levine, an active committee member, is serving as acting chair for this season. We will honor JoEllen’s memory on Saturday afternoon, January 7, at 4:30 p.m. at the Wilbanks.number of her own CDs and duets with others, and appearing regularly as a guest player at every major jazz festival around the globe. In 2000, Parrott began performing with the legendary guitarist and inventor, Les Paul. As part of the Les Paul Trio, Nicki worked side-by-side with guitar greats Paul McCartney, Slash and Steve Miller, as well as with notables Michel Legrand, Jose Feliciano, Dick Hyman, Patty Labelle, and the NY Pops Orchestra. Award-winning jazz pianist Rossano Sportiello is recognized for effortless swing and his broad interest in many jazz styles. Born in Vigevano, Italy, Sportiello played professionally at the age of sixteen in venues in the Milan area. With Europe’s historic “The Milano Jazz Gang”, he toured throughout Italy and West Europe leading to invitations for personal appearances in many countries. His rst trip to the U.S. and introduction to the American audiences was at the 2003 “March of Jazz” party in Clearwater Beach, Florida. He is now established in New York City and married to American writer Lala Moore. Don’t miss this opportunity to see and hear three compelling and innovative jazz artists on stage together, promising to be an evening of jazz to remember at Pelican Pavilion on Tuesday, January 24, at 7:30 p.m. Due to the popularity of this group, tickets will be available on January 24 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Pavilion, and at the door the evening of the performance. For more information, please contact PC Follies chairperson JoAnne Moran at (631) 455-3554.Pelican Programs Rings in the New in 2017By Felice Perlmutter & Libby Ross And January is jumping as our own Wylie Crawford presents our opening program on Tuesday, January 10, 8 p.m. in the Pavilion and literally rings in the new. A carillon player extraordinaire, Wylie is the fth University Carillonneur for the University of Chicago, and is the president of the World Carillon Federation. The University of Chicago carillon is an enormous instrument, with 72 bells cast in an English foundry, ranging from 10-pounders to 19-ton heavyweights. The stationary bells are struck by clappers wired to an organ-like console. The carillonneur controls both dynamics and rhythm by playing on a double row of keys and a pedal board. This is a rare opportunity to hear and learn about this most unusual instrument. And we continue jumping in January as the outstanding Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe returns to Pelican Cove on Monday, January 23, 8 pm, in the Pavilion. Founded by actor, singer, director and playwright Nate Jacobs, the WCBT has enjoyed tremendous growth from a grassroots organization (supported by Pelican Cove enthusiasts from its earliest days) to a successful not-for-prot professional theatre. Their performances have delighted our community. And February is equally exciting. On Saturday, February 18, 8 p.m. in the Pavilion, singer Rhonda Liss, Pelican Cove resident, presents The Many Faces of Love: A Broadway Tapestry. Vocalist Liss was a professional opera singer both here (at the Met in New York) and in Europe (The Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam) for many years. Her long-running cabarets, The Heartache and Sorrow Show, A Canary Called Quintessence and Everybody Says Don’t, met with critical and public acclaim in London, Berlin and Amsterdam. Her pianist is Alan Jay Corey, an award-winning musical director with credits at the Van Wezel, Sarasota Opera, American Stage and Theater Works, among others.This one-hour cabaret takes you from West Side Story to Cabaret to Carousel to Sondheim and many others, all interwoven with Rhonda’s humorous, lively, and engaging stories. A short sing-a-long will follow. Don’t miss this! Do mark your calendars for our March programs. Our popular Cinema Club leader, Del Jacobs, will explain how movies get made on Wednesday, March 1 at 8 p.m. at the Pavilion. Del is director of Film & Media Studies at State College of Florida, and professor of lm at Ringling College. He will lead a panel discussion on the traditional role of the Hollywood studio producer and the independent lm producer. 8JANUARY 2017PC Jazz ComboBy Wanda Darlington Jazz is “just around the corner” at the Pavilion every Thursday night, beginning January 12. The downbeat will again be at 7:30 p.m. in response to favorable comments from residents and musicians. While the name of the group implies strictly jazz, the PC Combo plays a wide variety of music for both listening and dancing. The Combo has a long history dating to l980, when a group of jazz-loving residents gathered to listen to and discuss music. Those with instruments enjoyed playing for themselves. With Stan Hendricks at the helm, soon others came to listen, and the Combo became a regular seasonal Thursday night event. Nick Cannici, Bob Howland, and Dave Farr kept the music owing after Stan’s death. The monetary gifts of residents and donations at the door have enabled the combo to continue through the years. Now, under the direction of Bobby Barnhardt, the Combo is composed of Sarasota musicians. You can expect to see Johnny Moore back on drums, John DeWit on bass and pianist Keith Carmen. Musicians comprising the “front line” will be Joe Bruno on trumpet, trombonist Marvin Luckett, and Bobby Barnhardt, sax and clarinet. Vocalists Sam Kaplan, Kathryn Anderson and I, are Pelican Cove residents who add their talents to the group. Vicki uses her experience as a math tutor in Sarasota, to write a series of books which teach basic elementary level math. The rst two chapters of each book tell the story of a 4th grade girl, Kayla, who is behind in math. Her math teacher feels she would benet from a tutor. The next two chapters are the math lessons given by the tutor, Ms. Gibbs, to Kayla, with considerable personal interaction. The books are aimed at 4th graders, but can be used for any age. Vicki is planning workshops for tutors. She will teach them to use her books with students, helping them gain the skills necessary to be successful in school. About Vicki: after she raised six really smart kids, she began studying for her Ph.D. in order to keep up with them. 11JANUARY 2017Meet Your Neighbor: Rebecca HarpBy Donna Anderson It’s 2017. We’ve drunk the cups, snuffed the candles, and boxed the lights. Strains of Auld Lang Syne are but a memory, and resolutions could dwindle as we face those rst 100 days. A crisp calendar, however, prompts an expectation of the new, the shiny, the promising. Like the year’s rst born or a freshly minted coin, then, it is nice to consider the reections of our young neighbor, Rebecca Harp. Rebecca is 35, single, and has just signed the fourth lease for her Grovehouse condo. She is a certied Neuromuscular Massage Therapist, a certied Reexologist, has a private practice, and teaches yoga. She is a very modern gal. “Do you ever look around your world and just feel like, ‘I am an odd duck.’” Interestingly, Rebecca’s referring to her native Harbor Beach, Michigan, not Pelican Cove. She had a lightbulb moment in her 17th year. Sitting in a basement playing Euchre with friends, she noted the parents on the other side of the room – beers in hand, a mullet haircut, missing teeth. It was perhaps a rare snapshot, but it struck a chord. “I look at Chris and I said, ‘Hey, do you want to be doing this when you’re 40?’ And, she’s like, ‘Yeaaahh!’” Rebecca called her sister in Sarasota the next week, and stayed with her for summer vacation. The options seemed better here. Rebecca graduated from high school in 2000, and moved south. She lived with her sister, Sarah, and looked after her young niece. She took classes at Florida College of Natural Health. She met her husband and married, only to divorce early on. The transitions from Michigan to Sarah’s home to marriage gave Rebecca little chance at independence. So, when she left their 4-bedroom home in Lakewood Ranch, hopscotching the county to live in borrowed bungalows and short-term rentals, accommodations were far from ideal. On the rst morning of the third move, she remembers waking up “in this sweet little townhouse where appliances were working, there was an air-conditioner, a coffee maker, and a laundry facility. I sat and cried.” More moves followed. Pelican Cove came up in a search on Craigslist. Rebecca thought it was magnicent. “I have pockets of solitude [here]. That’s what I really enjoy. My space.” Additionally, the cove’s deference to foliage and wildlife is a value she’s shared since childhood. With a seven-year-old friend, she would often set off for the tree-lined street two blocks from home. They searched for “Raw Nature.” Their motto: “to go where no human has ever been before.” Rebecca enjoys life in the cove. Once the rst question is out of the way – Why are you here? – people embrace and accommodate her. The next-door neighbors are musicians. She has had to request that they ‘keep it down’ in the evenings because she works early. She hears that the conversation has become, “Shhhh, Rebecca needs her sleep.” Another neighbor worries about Rebecca’s social life. She suggests, “You should go to Bonesh Grill. I think there’s a lot of young people there.” Between her practice and teaching yoga, Rebecca takes improv classes at Florida Studio Theater. She hangs out at Simon’s Coffee House, and meets up with friends. Her parents also migrated to Sarasota, so she spends time with family. Had she available hours to volunteer, Rebecca would work with youth. “I would be involved with empowering girls. One of the biggest things I’ve learned is not to listen to anybody else’s story about you. Don’t give anybody the patent to your story…And wildlife, following wolves especially. Yeah.” Like many her age, Rebecca’s tattoos tell a story. There is a heart on her left shoulder symbolizing the need for self-awareness. “I thought, goll, what a beautiful tattoo that would be, you know, right on my sleeve, a heart.” Her right arm bears a peacock feather. She has come to think of it as a quill that records her journey. A favorite line of poetry from “She Let Go” by the Rev. Sare Rose reads, “Like a leaf falling from a tree, she just let go.” The leaves that trail down her arm represent that line. It is a reminder: Move on; choose better; listen to your heart. She also likes dragonies. There are several. “But,” she says, “I have to x it. These two have this element of beauty and uidity, and these look like stickers. So, I’m like, crap, it’s permanent!” Her laughter is contagious. Future plans include owning her own home. A nice kitchen, lots of windows, enough property, “something where I could put my hands in,” are priorities. Rebecca would like a dog and a life’s partner. Friends have commented that her requirements for a mate are a tall order. She says, “I got divorced because I wanted a partnership. That’s why I’m single. I don’t want to date. PC resident Jeremy Yudkin, professor of music and co-director of the Center for Beethoven Research at Boston University, returns to the stage on Tuesday, March 14, 8 p.m. in the Pavilion, to entertain us with a close-up look at The Beatles who have been called the most iconic music group of modern times. Pelican Covers will remember his exciting presentation last year on Beethoven. And the nal Pelican Program of the season features The Odyssey Theatre, famous for its 10-minute plays. This is a local group of playwrights who work within the constraints of a 10 minute production. It is competitive and those plays which are presented have been judged for quality by a jury.
