JUNE JULY 2015 3 President s Post Dear Friends BOARD COMMITTEE MEETINGS I hope this finds everyone enjoying a fine late spring early summer season As I write this from our home in New England spring has finally arrived and the pile of snow in the shady spot by the front of our house is down to a modest two feet and fading fast Committee meetings scheduled for the months of June July Check Channel 195 the PC website or the Office for any changes Harbor Committee Wednesday June 3 9 a m Wednesday July 1 9 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Meanwhile at Pelican Cove our committees and our staff have had a busy month of May The Rules Harbor and Buildings Facilities Committees in particular together with our staff and the board have been working hard to wind up important remaining items on their agendas and making preparations for projects to be completed during the summer The board and committee business articles in this issue will give you a complete picture of the extent of this good work Wishing you all a summer filled with all the good things you hope to enjoy and some good surprises you hadn t expected Committee Doings May Following are highlights of the May committee meetings Harbor May 6 A motion to accept the Water Run Off Sub committee recommendation to install Sediment Vaults to inhibit solid matter from washing into the harbor was passed A motion to support the Grounds and B F Committee s efforts in this area was passed unanimously The Water Run Off Sub Committee has served its purpose and was disbanded It was reported that the Harbor Survey indicated little change from the April 2012 survey the depth of the harbor was not a major problem at this time there are 28 boat slips available and no kayak canoe racks available there are 39 people on the rack waiting list The Committee passed a motion to increase kayak storage at Clower Creek by 63 racks A motion to temporarily store some kayaks while construction is in progress at a site to be determined was passed A motion to request funding not to exceed 15 000 was passed An outside contractor will complete the work by the end of September 2015 Buildings Facilities May 8 The Committee sent to the Board the following recommendations to resurface the roads install 3 silt collection vaults and limit the finishing of outside decks to painting or staining Other subjects covered were the cleaning of individual units dryer vents the installation of a tennis wall the expansion of the doggy park and kayak storage expansion These items are likely to be brought up again at the next Committee meeting in the fall Gary Gulden President Bill McKay Treasurer suggested earlier involvement of the FC with management re the budget process In the past few years the board has introduced new projects in the middle of the budget cycle these need to be identified earlier so that they can be placed in the regular budget process The budget is tight but within bounds income is slightly above projected figures and expenses are currently 2 percent below projected figures Finance May 22 The subcommittee working on the review of possible capital expense projects plans to begin their work with an information gathering meeting with the Manager the Maintenance Coordinator and the Grounds Coordinator Sheldon Shelly Zelizer in GR110 has been appointed to fill the unexpired term of Judy Drolich who resigned from the board The action was taken at a special meeting of Board of Directors on Tuesday May 26 2015

JUNE JULY 2015 4 Additional Kayak Storage Approved By Dee Tashian Harbor Committee Chair Spurred on by demand from residents for more kayak storage and access to the water on May 19 the Board of Directors approved a recommendation from the Harbor Committee to modify the existing Clower Creek storage facility When complete this site will provide an additional 63 racks which is enough to accommodate a current waiting list of 39 residents provide additional space Living In Paradise Including The Snake By Ruth Brandwein The other morning I screamed as I entered the kitchen There on the floor just in front of the sink was a long yellow snake I must have frightened it as much as it frightened me because it immediately slithered across the floor and into the narrow space between the stove and cabinet and disappeared I optimistically assumed that it had found a hole in the wall and left Of course the wall behind the stove doesn t go outside but backs into the water heater closet I carefully opened the door and didn t see it but didn t look too closely All was well until this morning when I was awakened by a crash of something breaking What the hell was that I walked into the kitchen and there it was curled around the stemware on my open shelf above the sink looking as though it was poised to strike its forked tongue darting in for the future and create an additional steady revenue stream Of all the options considered with a slight 15 foot extension to the east this plan works well within the existing boundaries of the present site All existing bushes hedges along Clower Creek Drive remain in place which means there is no change to the sight line approaching or returning from the Far Harbor Bridge By reason of a very heavy summer work schedule Pelican Cove staff will be unable to complete this project so outside labor will be sought Management will take the lead by and out One of my best stemware lay shattered in the sink below After my first near encounter I had checked my Florida nature book and determined it was a rat snake the second most common snake to southwestern Florida The book had cautioned that although it is non poisonous a bite can be very painful I withdrew from the kitchen and called the office but of course at 8 a m the office was closed and I was instructed in case of emergency call the gatehouse I decided this WAS an emergency I called Rosie and within 5 minutes Doug Stockhill my hero arrived By now my snake had stretched itself in and out among the stemware It looked to be about 3 feet long Doug was baffled I don t know how I m going to get it out without breaking all your stemware But first he took a photo of it for the record At that point the snake s head was all the way to the right end of the shelf and the end of his tail was at the other end Asking recruiting and supervising labor The Harbor Committee will provide the design plan courtesy of David Schowalter a retired professional designer and manage the temporary relocation of any kayaks that will need to be removed to accommodate the new design plan by coordinating with residents and their alternates Depending on the weather work is estimated to take no more than 3 4 weeks to complete and is projected to be finished by September 30 Doug not to move I quietly approached the shelf on the left with my walking stick held handle up in case it should strike I spoke softly to the snake shushing it and telling it not to be afraid As it stared at me I carefully and quietly removed one of my large wine goblets at the end farthest from its head I then proceeded in the same manner to remove two more but as it continued to move its head always staring at me I withdrew not wanting to press my luck The snake now had moved from a flat position covering the entire shelf to a more contracted pose in one corner Now Doug had an idea He got a TJ large paper bag and with a pair of tongs and my oven mitt over one hand he gently prodded it into the bag and only two more glasses fell into the sink He quickly shut the bag opened the door and freed this marvelous creature into the bushes where it can eat rodents or whatever to it heart s content A final word to the wise we live in paradise but even paradise has spiders palmetto bugs hungry raccoons snakes and other critters They are usually as afraid of us as we are of them They re just trying to live Don t panic Call Doug

JUNE JULY 2015 Connie s Corner By Connie Lang General Manager 5 months They will begin working on the twelfth Glenhouse building at 1707 Pelican Cove Road once they have completed the emergency Brookhouse deck repairs The painters are completing the tenth Glenhouse building at 1711 Pelican Cove Road and completed painting the new siding associated with the roofing project The painters have continued to perform drywall repairs in units affected by structural repairs and have assisted with accomplishing set ups for events and classes The crew cleaned the rip rap at the bay end of Bayhouse Point Drive and will be installing a new catch basin to help filter the storm water runoff before it drains into the bay The crew has been heavily pruning the scheffeleras and fiddle leaf figs that are too tall so that they will fill out later in the year A good example of this technique is the scheffelera at the end of Pelican Point Drive it was heavily pruned last year and is flourishing now The crew also raised the level of a sidewalk at BR162 that was underwater in heavy rain storms The carpenters completed the maintenance of the eleventh Glenhouse building at 1709 Pelican Cove Road The carpenters have started replacing the failing elevated decks in the Brookhouse neighborhood The first deck in this project is located at 1667 Brookhouse Circle The carpenters will work on this project for the next two Celebrating 35 Years By Linda Wolf Virginia Tashian November 15 2015 will mark the 35th anniversary of the Pelican Cove Condominium Association we know today when the owners voted to merge the then 17 existing associations into one Eighty nine percent of owners voted in favor all 17 condos had to We permanently mounted a condensing microphone on the ceiling of the Harbor Club meeting room This installation allows the hearing loop and built in speakers in the room to be used during meetings and presentations without requiring the installation of multiple microphones and cables The Wind Mitigation Inspector inspected the buildings that have wind mitigation forms that expire in 2015 and the buildings that we recently re roofed As of May the office had assisted with 26 real estate sales We are upgrading our telephone plan with Verizon to save 200 per month on the Association telephone bill at no cost to the Association The Communications Committee plans to activate the updated website on October 1 At this time 95 of the group club web pages have been created The office provided the Planning Committee chair with the complete survey data base agree to the merger and 100 percent agreement of lien holders was required Interestingly a quick study of the names of the 83 founders those who actually owned PC property at that time as listed in A History of Pelican Cove suggests that about 35 of them or their family members still own today We who live here now owe a great deal to these visionaries The staff will accomplish the following projects during the off season Update Wind Mitigation Forms Restore Remaining Roads Install Stormwater Vaults Rebuild Failing Brookhouse Decks Replace Specified Carport Roofs Renovate Harbor Club Fitness Facility Expand Clower Creek Kayak Storage Facility Proactively Fumigate Five Buildings Resurface Far Harbor Pool Improve the Surveillance System Install Bayhouse Point Drive Catch Basin Extend Reclaimed Water Line Install a Connecting Walk Path Beside the Pavilion Pool Building Improve the Walk Path beside the Pavilion Re grade the Sodded Area Behind HA231 Re grade the Area Behind BR141 Replant Areas Around the Harbor Replant Area Under Oak Tree in Front of the Office Re landscape Area at TR137 at Owner Expense Update Reserve Study Archive Files Prepare the 2016 Operational Budget Complete Continuing Education Coursework Thirty five years is listed as the emerald jade or coral anniversary celebration Pelican Cove s lush grounds certainly reflect the green option Plans are afoot to hold a celebration on Sunday November 15 and other later programs planned by Board Recognized Groups will support the anniversary Save the date and stay tuned

JUNE JULY 2015 6 Bulletin Board Bullets By Erlinda Rejino Another active successful season has come and gone at the Cove Activities slow down and demand for posting space on our outdoor bulletin boards quiets significantly The multiple listing poster for weekly activities has been removed and weekly classes may again post individually from now through November Managing the boards during the 12 weeks January March of high season is when multiple activities compete for the posting space During the 2014 15 season the Communications Committee ran an experiment using smaller sleeves on selected bulletin boards to increase the posting space Upon review of the Dryer Vent Cleaning experiment s results the committee has determined that the smaller sleeves are not the answer and will return all the bulletin boards to the 8 5 x 11 sleeves over the course of the summer What is the answer The committee is working over the summer to find some alternative posting mechanisms and will be developing proposals for the Building Facilities Committee s consideration for the long term solution In the shorter term there are some questions the various groups using the boards can ask themselves to make the cooperative use of the current posting space workable 1 Are we adhering to the 10 day prior to the event posting rule or do we post when convenient and sometimes it is a day or three early is prudent for PC to look into anything that can help prevent these fires By Selden Sutton Each year there are approximately 15 500 dryer fires in the U S due to uncleaned dryer vents Staff is aware of one such fire happening in Pelican Cove While there is no cause for alarm given our wooden structures and the fact that we are surrounded by woods it In the coming months the B F committee will be presenting a recommendation to the Board on this subject Questions to be resolved include whether or not to leave it up to individual owners to make their own dryer vent cleaning decisions whether to hire an outside company to check 2 Do we immediately remove our postings or do we depend on other folks to take care of this for us 3 If posting a registration date for an event and registration is required for the event is it necessary to post the event as well 4 Although there are 30 outdoor bulletin boards on site is it reasonable to expect that each event will be posted on all 30 boards Might strategic placement in each neighborhood be more reasonable 5 How can we use the revised website to help with our posting needs Let s continue working together to find the solution and make cooperation and camaraderie our guiding principles and clean all PC dryer vents or whether to handle the matter in house using PC staff Costs vary significantly as you may imagine with the greatest expense going to individuals who handle this problem on their own We will have more news on this subject so stay tuned Pelican Cove University IN MEMORIAM By JoEllen DeMarco Good news Pelican Cove University will present its second summer semester starting Tuesday July 7 with a Great Books seminar facilitated by Toby Cosin Toby has led Great Books discussions for many years The first session on July 7 at 1 30 p m will be an organizational and planning meeting This class will be followed in August by David Triggle presenting a four week lecture series starting Thursday August 6 at 10 a m with an intriguing title Mankind s Final Century the decline and fall of practically everything Mark your calendars to participate in another stimulating thought provoking summer at Pelican Cove We mourn the passing of Mike Dellapa GR144 January 11 Doris DeWees BA114 May 1 Bruce Sabel BA120 May 19 FORMER RESIDENTS FRIENDS Jackie Caplan May 11 We extend our sincerest sympathy to their family and friends TAKE DOWN POOL UMBRELLAS WHEN LEAVING POOLS Gusty winds from sudden storms can damage them

JUNE JULY 2015 7 here On our way back to Tampa I stopped at an Italian restaurant I asked the fellow that was setting up When do you open for lunch He told me and I said Oh that s not going to work for us we ve got to catch a plane He said Well I ll make it happen So he opened early We were the only two customers I said to Colleen why are we going home She said Well let s make it happen We put a deadline on it and made 30 days our goal We just did it We moved here not knowing anyone but it s been wonderful it s turned into a life that s very rewarding Meet Your Neighbor Bob Gibson By Donna Anderson Bob Gibson is a factotum a bicycler and a very romantic guy He hails from Michigan and though there isn t much about Saginaw he misses Bob has recreated a bit of his boyhood lake side summers here replacing the family johnboat with a motorized canoe A couple of years ago if you saw a small yellow craft cruise our waters replete with hand painted shark teeth an umbrella sheltered blonde and a khaki suited captain at the helm well then you know the Gibsons Bob and Colleen have a new boat this spring which has yet to sport the same flair but wait for it It will come They live life large and together Bob was a career fireman protecting the homes and businesses lining Saginaw s city streets during General Motors heyday He joined the force at 21 because he needed a job Bob says They helped mold who I am He trained as a paramedic learned to cook and honed mechanical skills that he uses today To be a good fireman if you re going to start a saw up in the middle of the night when it s 0 degrees out you better know how to do it Bob says That fit me to a tee And though memories of the many fatal fires he was called to still hurt it was a great career choice We used to have guys that said I d take the better job but God s already got it They felt that strong about it They loved what they were doing and I did too Bob retired in 1994 and had the misfortune he quips of owning a mortgage company I ve owned 50 homes some of them rented some flipped some of them bought and sold the same day on a land contract to someone who couldn t buy a house If it has to do with a home I ve pretty much done it Misfortune or not it is what eventually brought him south I had Florida branches We d come down here for work and then to go back to my gritty little town What s the point he d think Eventually Bob brought Colleen down on vacation Her birthday is in January and I bought tickets to come down Once here Colleen took a job with the Herald Tribune To keep busy Bob advertised on the bulletin boards for handyman services He didn t want pay He wanted connection and maybe a beer A trade system ensued Much of the bartered treasure lines their walls and graces their tables The gallery is beautifully exhibited Before hanging them Bob set paintings and photos out on the floor to find the perfect artistic arrangement That s Maria Kron that s Ike Steinberg he says and so on around the room I think it s wonderful But the barter system didn t last People felt a need to pay So I came up with a nominal fee and it s exploded During season I take all the work I can get Through it all however they make time for themselves We ride bikes on Sunday s go to yoga Tuesdays Fridays and they take out that new boat when possible We don t miss those things The occasion that sets Bob apart from all others is the surprise wedding he planned for his bride She said to me I d like to get married but I don t really want to deal with all of the planning That set my gears in motion and I thought I can do this It really was kind of the funnest thing I ve ever done Under the guise of attending another party Bob proposed to Colleen on Siesta Key gave her a bouquet and said This is your wedding day Colleen adds We walked up the beach and there was a heart carved in the sand strewn with rose petals Our friends greeted us with champagne I was impressed Bob had rings and vows and I had nothing she laughs Richard Weingarten performed the ceremony eliciting a promise that they legalize the marriage downtown the next day Dee Hamill hosted the reception It was gorgeous I went over there on Thursday and she had ladies helping her set up I didn t know who they were and she wouldn t tell them what they were doing You can t tell a secret in Pelican Cove she said Their wedding album is stunning Photos of joyful faces fill each page My new thing is let s take advantage of being here Every morning we get up early and I make a pot of coffee We go somewhere and drink it so if you see us in your neighborhood that s what we re doing drinking our morning coffee Bob sees the future simply I want to grow old here that s what I want to do and get as much of this as I can I don t see that changing in me

JUNE JULY 2015 8 Above and Below Stairs By Virginia Tashian Editor This story is printed as an example of the type of memoir that the Writer s Group is collecting from residents for a major project Tales Out of Pelican Cove which will be presented during next season This is not a contest All submissions will be accepted Watching Downton Abbey reminds me of my own younger days from the age of 9 through teens and university years of my many visits to Breadsall Priory a grand house in Derbyshire England with some 400 acres of land My godmother Norah was the lady of the manor She had married quite late in life an untitled landed gentleman Eric Haslam His father a refrigeration pioneer had purchased the house in the late 1800 s It was a former 13th century Augustinian priory dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536 Over the years it fell into disrepair was purchased around 1800 by Erasmus Darwin grandfather to Charles Darwin and restored later that century to its ultimate Victorian grandeur At the end of a long drive stood the house complete with turret There was a vast entrance hall with highly polished floors an organ and a large gong that the butler Keene sounded to summon the household for meals My brother and I were privileged on occasion to beat the gong Other old retainers were Hannah the cook Eileen the housemaid and those who lived on the property in cottages and came in daily cleaning staff gardeners chauffeur the bailiff and tenant farmers There was a gun room a large paneled dining room a morning room drawing room large library and a wonderful billiard room wood paneled with a musicians gallery from which I gave performances of verse and song to the assembled household There were bedrooms and bathrooms some bath fittings having elaborate polished wood borders and gold faucets There were copious attics a nursery suite and a suite for bachelors far from the rooms of young ladies Below stairs through green baize swing doors were larders pantries 2 vast kitchens storerooms cellars the bailiff or estate manager s office and of course the servants hall There were even excavations of the old priory My brother and I moved happily above and below stairs filling our days with whatever our host and hostess might be doing as well as helping in the butler s pantry the kitchen or with bed making ironing table setting flower arranging beekeeping rose pruning for me or with the wine cellar shooting hedging ditching other estate work for my brother Keene the butler was much of an age with Mr Eric and served as his valet and shooting companion He was also probably his oldest friend Keene a widower lived in the gatehouse at the end of the drive My brother and I both learned from him the skills and techniques of serving at table holding the vegetable or other dishes on the left of each diner and removing soiled plates from the right The china glass silver services were magnificent and different for each meal Derby is home to Crown Derby china and the house had a magnificent collection of historic show pieces arrayed in a vast cabinet The adjacent home farm was another delight Almost everything served was home grown There were cows to learn how to milk calves to admire and feed cats chickens pigs as well as vegetable gardens greenhouses a walled herb garden stables and coach houses converted to garages There were woods rolling lawns a pond cedar tree and a rose garden a hillock where daffodils bloomed in spring where gravestones of former family dogs horses and other pets were found We went walking with the dogs usually after luncheon and returned for tea at 4 p m Dinner was at 8 p m and we always changed into something a little dressier Sometimes there were guests country gentry who came for luncheon or tea One memorable snowy night all the god daughters nieces and nephews were invited to stay at the same time Local guests were invited for the evening and there was a Ball with a band midnight supper and all the excitement of the house decorated for Christmas Two of the invited guests were actors from the holiday show in nearby Derby Cinderella an attractive blonde soon became well known as Susannah Yorke Over time the long serving staff retired or passed away The worries of getting qualified live in staff began I did my bit in my late teens as chief cook and bottle washer for a short spell when I learned to my surprise that I could cook freshly killed grouse When Uncle Eric died without direct heirs the property was sold There was an auction of furnishings and art when I was too far away to attend My godmother built a house on a part of the estate keeping items and treasures she wished Dee and I visited her there once or twice All this is a long time ago However if you want to know more about Breadsall Priory you can visit it in person or on the web as Breadsall Priory Marriott Hotel and Country Club the oldest Marriott in the world with two golf courses a spa new buildings where farm buildings stood Many of the rooms in the house have been converted for banquets and conference rooms Much of it looks familiar I really must go there myself and see what I might recognize
