4 February Board Results Both the February Board Workshop and Board Meeting were devoted to four subjects changing the design of front elevated decks on Brookhouse buildings implementing an updated survey of the boat basin and its channels defining a Harbor Club fitness facility renovation and adding a noise rule to The Rules We Live By TRWLB Front Decks Unlike the other neighborhoods with postand beam structured front elevated decks the Brookhouse buildings have cantilevered decks Several of these now need significant structural repairs The replacement of cantilevered beams would involve extensive demolition of the first floor kitchen ceiling whereas rebuilding the decks using a post and beam method could be completed less expensively more quickly and without the extensive demolition Management has estimated the dollar savings to replace all decks at about 840 000 and a time savings of 223 weeks or four years The Board unanimously approved the revised approach Harbor Survey For a decade a plan has been in the works to dredge the harbor in 2016 at a cost of about 170 000 This task would involve receiving permits to go ahead with the project Our consultant Marine Engineer Kristy Tignor has told us that we need to conduct a survey of the harbor within the next 30 60 days if we wish to have the needed permits in time to conduct dredging in 2016 The Harbor Committee proposed that we ask Weber Engineering Surveying Inc Before You Leave MARCH 2015 to carry out the survey Weber did the last survey of the harbor making them familiar with the eccentricities of this body of water The Board unanimously approved Harbor s survey plan at a cost of approximately 4 250 Fitness Facility The Board discussed six different proposed plans to renovate the fitness facility for the first time this month The Board agreed that the key to any renovation is the movement or removal of the sauna from its current location in the Harbor Club Furthermore the location of storage areas for tables and chairs within the building is critical since storage areas have to be convenient to the meeting room A major plus would be the ability to relocate the sauna within the Harbor Club Buildings Facilities will take the challenge up at its March meeting and the Board will follow up at its March Workshop Noise The proposed resolution from the Rules Committee to add noise as a formal offense in TRWLB had been distributed to Board members several days before the Board Meeting as a result of which several changes were suggested The Board accepted a revised resolution for consideration Key to the revised resolution was the statement that no offensive noise is permitted at any time but especially between 10 p m and 7 30 a m Offensive noise includes noise that is objectionable to nearby residents such as shouting playing blaring music excessively loud conversation talking loudly on a cell phone etc The Board accepted this resolution by a 7 2 vote Don t forget to follow the Checklist Before Leaving for the Season while closing up your unit for the summer One is located as an insert in this issue of the PC News or you can pick up a copy at the PC Office Notify the PC Office of any change in contact numbers and mailing address when you are leaving for the summer months to receive important notices for emergency contact and your PC News House Checkers It is important that owners do their best to protect their property and that of their neighbors by turning the water OFF to the unit and hiring a house checker to perform WEEKLY inspections while away from Pelican Cove The longer the leaks go unreported the more damage there will be to the unit or units House checkers need to flush all toilets and run water in sinks to prevent raps from drying out Dry traps allow sewer rodents to enter a unit If you don t know where the shut off is for your unit simply complete a work request a few days before you are scheduled to leave and a staff member will stop by to show you Reporting Water and A C Leaks If you happen to experience a plumbing or A C leak that causes water damage to your walls floors or ceilings it is important to notify the Office to determine who is financially responsible Emergencies in which water is currently flowing should be reported immediately via a phone call to the Office 966 5674 during normal business hours or the Gatehouse 966 2992 on evenings and weekends Slow leaks seepage or stains should be reported via a written work request during normal business hours Upon notification a staff member will examine the site and advise the owner of the proper course of action

MARCH 2015 6 Committee Doings February Following are highlights of the February committee meetings Harbor February 4 28 boat slips are available 25 residents are waiting for kayak storage space The committee is asking the Board to approve a harbor survey so that the committee can finalize plans for harbor dredging in 2016 With the continuing need for more kayak storage space the committee is focusing on Bayhouse Point as the best possible location The committee is studying water runoff and drainage into the harbor Buildings Facilities February 6 A resolution was sent to the Board re Brookhouse balcony repairs There was more discussion on the Fitness Room renovation several options were presented the biggest issue being the removal of the Sauna The maintenance crew will work on the drainage issue at 1627 Brookhouse Drive Communications February 10 The Committee discussed ways the entire community could better participate in recycling including instituting best practices for the Office staff and clubs groups that includes using recyclable products and considering adding something about recycling to the Cove s mission statement the Meet and Greets use of the Bulletin Boards and the progress of the new website launch Grounds February 11 A 3 year removal replacement plan was presented and will be combined with an arborist s report due in March as input to the 2016 federally guaranteed instruments that may pay higher rates than FDIC insured deposits The committee agreed to explore the concept of a contingency fund with an upper and lower limit so that when the fund reached the low limit it would be replenished Rules February 23 The Committee is proposing to strengthen the rules regarding the use of house checkers It is preparing a resolution proposing to Tennis Club is especially active now with the arrival of many of our members for the prime season in Pelican Cove We celebrated at a party in late January and had a terrific time so much so that we decided to have an additional end of season party on Friday March 20 at The Wilbanks This one will be chaired by Vicki Geskos You must contact her no later than March 13 if you plan to attend In February we established a new maintenance sub committee spearheaded by Ben Kaplan and Eric Stackowicz They met with PC s Jack Stevens and in no time flat our issues were addressed Broken nets were mended and power washed Towels have been ordered to help dry the courts to ensure safe play Our 12 times for round robins 8 30 10 a m at the Pavilion M F and 10 11 30 a m at the Harbor Monday Friday plus our regular Tuesday Thursday round robins at the Pavilion are allowing all of our members to find games at their level of play and to find tennis partners We hope you will join us at our next meeting on Monday March 2 at The Wilbanks at noon Our clinics with Mike Price are continuing on Saturday from 11 a m 12 30 p m and on Wednesday from 6 7 30 p m at the Harbor

MARCH 2015 7 Art Show is March 14 15 and 16 Jane Freund Cheryll Glowacki You Can Still Vote from page 1 The entries are in and this year s Art Show promises to be a great representation of all the talented visual artists here in Pelican Cove The show will be held Saturday and Sunday from 1 5 p m and Monday from 1 4 p m at both Pavilion and Harbor Club As usual we are drawing on a huge pool of volunteers to receive and display artworks create the catalog greet visitors bake cookies serve refreshments make signs the list goes on and on All the while Pelican Cove employees are working behind the scenes to ensure that it all goes smoothly Highlights of this year s show are Open studios and demonstrations at Wilbanks Art Photography and Woodworking and Harbor Sculpture and Fiber Arts on Saturday from 1 5 p m An expanded display area in the Pavilion to accommodate the growing number of participating artists A gourmet wine and food basket featuring gift certificates from your favorite local establishments to be raffled off along with Ettie Wurtzel s fabulous flower arrangement as a fundraiser for the Art Show and surprises along the way A few reminders for the artists Make sure your pieces are labeled front and back and ready to hang with picture wire attached Art must be dropped off from 9 a m Noon on Friday March 13 at either Harbor Fiber Arts only or Pavilion all other media No work will be accepted after Noon The artists reception will be held Friday March 13 at Wilbanks from 5 6 30 p m Please bring an hors d oeuvre to share Due to space constraints the reception is for participating artists only See you at the show is allowed by our documents which state that proxy votes remain valid for up to 90 days after their initial due date Two awards were presented at the Annual Meeting The Sterling Emerson award initiated to honor the special efforts of a Pelican Cove volunteer outside of the committee structure was awarded to Bernie Hamel for her 15 years of tireless efforts to upgrade the Pelican Cove library The Volunteer of the Year award was presented jointly to Charlie and JoEllen DeMarco for their efforts to reinvigorate Pelican Cove University over the past three years The Annual Meeting concluded with comments by owners on any subject after which the Annual Meeting was formally suspended to reconvene on April 7 Harriet Gayle Nature Walk Sam Alaimo On Tuesday March 17 and Thursday March 19 from 10 30 a m to noon Harriet Gayle will lead another of her popular nature walks Actually she says they are more like nature creeps or nature crawls little territory is covered but a lot of interesting information is dispensed Come and find out the special characteristics of a particular tree For example is the tree native or exotic or is the tree outstanding in its role in history and or the environment Similar to previous explorations some common vegetation around The Wilbanks will be discussed Special attention will be paid to the mangroves growing along the bay Sign up for either walk is on Tuesday March 10 at 9 30 a m at the Pavilion gazebo Space is limited to 20 participants for each walk

MARCH 2015 8 STAN HENDRICKS JAZZ CONCERT SERIES For the third concert of the season meet Terry Myers who is undoubtedly one of the best all around reed players in the country today His versatility and expertise on the clarinet and saxophone are a treat to the ears So said Buddy Morrow former leader of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and one of the great musicians and band leaders during the early stages of the Big Band Era An Iowa native Myers was a member of the US Marine Corps Reserves for five years After college where he majored in music and education he honed his musical talent and soon developed a successful career in Nashville and New York City When Myers decided to move to Florida he quickly became one of the most in demand musicians in the state He was a band leader at Disney World s Epcot Center for four years and for a time led the band at Rosie O Grady s which was part of the popular Church Street Station entertainment complex in downtown Orlando In 1992 he was invited to form and lead a Tribute to Benny Goodman orchestra which performed successfully for many years at such attractions as Busch Gardens in both Florida and Virginia Cypress Gardens and Silver Springs as well as most of the major concert halls in Florida and across the country Now featured as conductor performer with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra he is an exceedingly charming host who puts the audience at ease and then wows them with his musical presentation With Myers will be Ron Texeira on Piano Bassist Al Dodds Drummer Reinhart Winkler and featured vocalist Simone Kopmajer Austrian born Simone Kopmajer has toured Europe Asia and spends a couple of weeks annually in the United States Currently touring and performing at Heidi s Jazz Club in Cocoa Beach this fresh young singer is dynamite For those interested in excellent jazz vocals rooted in the past while leaning toward the future Simone does not disappoint Come meet Terry Myers and Simone Kopmajer Monday March 2 7 30 p m at The Pavilion A 5 donation is requested at the door PC Writers March Events Jan Hasselbring First Annual Writers Fair Tuesday March 10 at 7 p m at the Pelican Pavilion Join us for the first ever Writer s Fair at Pelican Cove Our very own writers will speak briefly about their writing and have their work on display Beginning at 7 p m each writer will give a brief description presentation reading of his her writing books Following the live presentations there will be an informal time for perusing the writers works and chatting with them over a glass of wine or punch Books will be available for signing purchase To paraphrase an Emily Dickinson poem A word is dead when it is said written some say I say it just begins to live that day Though Dickinson a prolific writer of poetry favored the reclusive life we think she ll forgive us for coming out of seclusion for an evening and bringing the written word to life We invite you to join us Writers Present with Lyla Ward Tuesday March 24 at 7 p m at the The Harbor Club Ms Ward will share the evolution of her book in progress Broadway Schrafft s and Jewish Rye about the Upper West Side of Manhattan in the 1930 s and early 1940 s and read essays from her book revealing the unique characteristics of the neighborhood in which she grew up Her first book How to Succeed at Aging Without Really Dying was an Amazon best seller in hardcover paperback Kindle and audio versions Over 60 years she has published numerous works of humorous verse op eds personal essays and pieces of social commentary in newspapers and magazines around the country including Good Housekeeping The Wall Street Journal Cosmopolitan Woman s Day Family Circle The Washington Post the Chicago Tribune The Christian Science Monitor and Newsday among many others Small World Department John Adler Recently I became well acquainted with Duncan Finlay a retired CEO of Sarasota Memorial Hospital Before he came to visit me I asked him if he had ever been in Pelican Cove and he said he had not Then when he arrived Duncan told me that passing The Wilbanks jogged his memory In the early 1970 s when he was a young doctor practicing in Sarasota Duncan made a house call to treat Mae Ashton Wilbanks She had previously sold the Pelican Cove property but retained the right to live in her home until her death on April 18 1976 at age 92 Her grandson John Henry Wilbanks knew Duncan and requested him to make the house call

MARCH 2015 9 Coffee Programs Janet Hasselbring Been Ripped Off Lately Wednesday March 11 On Wednesday March 11 Fred Traub representing the office of the Florida Attorney General will speak on the timely topic Seniors vs Crime The Seniors vs Fraud project of the Florida Attorney s office was organized to assist citizens of any age without any charge who have encountered difficulty in a business transaction whether with a handyman home repair matter a large corporate entity or an Amazon gift card Traub will give us information about the project and help us be on the alert against identity theft scams and dealing with tradespeople specifically how to protect yourself and your property He s been a volunteer and speaker for the project since 2000 Coffee at 9 30 a m program at 10 a m Admission is by donation and for the record your donation is scam free Our Ever Changing Cove Wednesday March 25 Rob Wright coordinator of the Neighborhood Environmental Stewardship Team NEST of Sarasota County and Lou Hayes Byron Director Sustainability Project of Sarasota County will be our speakers After giving an overview of the NEST program and its goals regarding the protection and restoration of water resources in Sarasota County they will give an update on the two NEST pilot projects undertaken here at Pelican Cove and then discuss the issue near and dear to all of us the status of Pelican Cove s cove and the impact that closing Midnight Pass has had both on the quality and amount of water in the cove As much as the residents of Pelican Cove would like a quick fix to Little Sarasota Bay s water problems Wright and Byron will explain how the cove is part of a bigger picture and explain what we can and cannot do about the problems Wright will address issues of dredging Rob Wright coordinator of the Neighborhood Environmental mangroves sea grass plantings bio swales and pervious pavement in his presentation Lastly Stewardship Team NEST of in keeping with another of NEST s goals they will invite our residents to get involved with a Sarasota County project that will help improve the quality of Little Sarasota Bay and Pelican Cove Wright has been involved in the administration and implementation of water resource environmental management programs in the public and private sector for over 30 years He is a lifelong Florida resident and has extensive experience in developing environmental education and outreach programs on water resource issues Byron was part of the Climate Change Forum held on February 24 This program is cosponsored with the Pelican Cove Bay and Water Committee chaired by Onie Morse Coffee at 9 30 a m program at 10 a m at the Pelican Pavilion Be there Smoke Detectors Within Units IN MEMORIAM We mourn the passing of Name Jack Schawel Unit BR104 on Month Day February 4 Flo Worthington BA173 February 6 We extend our sincerest sympathy to their family and friends Connie Lang The NFPA 101 Life Safety Code adopted by Florida in 1988 requires that a smoke detector shall be installed outside every sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of each bedroom and on all levels of a dwelling unit This is a reminder to you to ensure that your unit complies with the Florida Life Safety Code and that you ensure that your smoke detectors are functioning properly It is advised that you replace the batteries in your smoke detectors annually You may need to hire someone with a ladder to assist you with this task Many owners choose a specific day of the year such as New Year s Day to accomplish this task

10 MARCH 2015 Cultural Events Committee A Violin Piano Concert Iris Graffman Bergas The Committee is pleased to present two outstanding young musicians from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia at The Pavilion on March 9 at 8 p m Jung Min Choi violinist was born in Seoul Korea and entered The Curtis Institute of Music at the age of fourteen She won first prize in Ewha Kyung Hyang Music Chunchoo and Hanmi Competitions She was named a finalist in the 2010 Philadelphia Orchestra Albert M Greenfield Student Competition and the 2013 Stulberg International String Competition Chang Yong Shin pianist was born in South Korea and was the winner of the Kookmin Ilbo Hansei University Music competition C Bechstein Samik music competition Hankook Ilbo Music Competition CBS music competition Ewha Kyeonghyang music competition prizewinner of The Chopin Junior competition Eumyeon music competition and Chunchu music competition in Korea in addition to third prize and two special prizes of the Eastman Young International Piano Competition in America His poetic intensity and confident simplicity of talent captured audiences in his performances at Kumho art Hall The Mozart Hall and The Youngsan art Hall in Korea He has been studying with Robert McDonald at The Curtis Institute of Music since 2011 Tickets will be distributed on Monday March 9 between 1 and 3 p m and at 7 p m at the Pavilion We appreciate a contribution of 5 per ticket Reserved seating will only be available for our Benefactor contributors Many thanks to all our contributors Pelican Cove University Alice Levine The PC University season is continuing very successfully Classes have been well attended Ethics Morals and Society taught by David Triggle had to be moved to the Pelican Pavilion because of the large number of attendees Please remember the new classes beginning this month Modern Architecture with Bob Cassway on March 5 at 1 30 p m Current Events with Richard Weingarten on March 11 at 1 30 p m The final session of Iris Bergas s class Aspects of Music will be held on Friday March 27 at the Pelican Pavilion at 4 p m This month we would like to introduce Laura Shulman who is moderating the Great Books course In previous years Shulman has taught Short Stories for two seasons and a Contemporary Poetry course for one She is enjoying the Great Books formula the course provides a great community of learning and has proven very popular Shulman received her BA in philosophy and English from Tufts University and went on to earn a PhD in English from Rutgers University In the early nineties she changed course and attended Law School She then practiced Family Law for thirteen years in New York State After retirement in 2010 her and her husband Mark became snow birds here in Pelican Cove They continue to spend six months a year in Woodstock New York where she teaches Short Story courses at a community lifelong learning program in nearby Saugerties The PCU Board hopes we can continue to offer courses during the summer as they proved very popular last year If anyone is interested please contact JoEllen DeMarco or any of the University Board members We are also looking for teachers to offer courses for the 2016 season We have had many requests for more courses in literature Shakespeare anyone psychology or other humanities

MARCH 2015 12 How Friends Become Family Helene Rosenberg We are a group of seven women who come together once a week for an hour and a half As a group we worked outside of our homes while raising our children and we retired to this gated community condominium of 731 units There are many physical educational and cultural activities that we can pursue in our community However when Miriam s husband died she felt the need for a support group with other women a group where you could talk about yourself and express your feelings We formed just such a group 14 years ago At the onset ground rules were developed No one was to be judgmental Whatever was said stayed in the group No one interrupted or gave advice unless it was requested Topics were introduced Who influenced your life the most Do you ever feel lonely or alone What should you tell your grown children What responsibilities if any do we owe each other At the beginning of the meeting each person can speak briefly about their week or a problem that they need to share One participant had a husband with Alzheimer s She needed to discuss with the group if and when he should be placed in a nursing home After much group discussion she finally decided to do it Another started a relationship with a man and no longer needed us A new member was chosen with group consensus We decided to call each other every morning just to see if all is well The morning telephone chain turned into a What are you doing today Do your need a ride to a doctor To the airport To have your car repaired One of us was always available to help We all have other friends and participate in events outside of the group However we see one another for many social activities a movie a play a concert Several have gone on vacations together We have gotten to know each other s families We are truly an extended family We share a list of all our children s addresses and phone numbers in the event of an emergency We share happy moments together as well as the sad events in our lives A death in our family A loss of a friend A sudden illness We are a part of a generation that is living longer and our needs have changed We want to function as independently as possible When our children cannot reach us by telephone we like to tell them isn t it wonderful we are just so busy living a good life We are seven women who came together late in our lives We are 83 to 95 years of age Of course we celebrate our birthdays together in a special way The big birthdays also call for a special gift We feel good about having each other in our lives We are truly blessed Wow It is Not Only Knitting Erlinda Rejino Fiber Arts Group This was the statement of a Pelican Cove resident who walked in on a Fiber Arts workshop about nature printing conducted by Marilyn Shipman This person had just seen the fiber painting in the Wilbanks living room entitled Big Fish Little School and was told the Fiber Arts group was meeting upstairs This resident and many others are surprised to learn that the fiber arts are broad ranging Yes knitting is involved but so are weaving macrame embroidery rug hooking latch hooking quilting fabric dying crocheting yarn spinning fiber collage and anything else the imagination can do with fiber In addition to nature printing the Fiber Arts members have also attended a skill building workshop from Barbara Keller the hooker rug hooking that is There have also been open sessions where members have shared information on quilting basics embroidery and quilt design Several of these artistic skills will be demonstrated during the Art Show s open studio time Saturday March 14 from 1 5 p m Although there is no fiber studio the fiber artists will be sharing their skill with residents in the Harbor Club venue of the Art Show The Harbor Club will house the fiber arts exhibit of the Art Show for all three days of the show March 14 15 and 16 Come and see what can be done with fiber so you too can say with certainty Wow it is not only knitting Mason featured in the Southeast Guide Dog s Advertising belongs to Sue Spicer one of our Grove house neighbors

MARCH 2015 Website Word Erlinda Rejino What is the latest word on the website review The beta site is up and beginning to take shape A beta site is in essence a test site it looks like the revised site will eventually look and is a place where designers can see whether revisions will work as intended Website Review Committee members are reviewing sections of the site and making recommendations for modifications Yes many others will have a chance to see the beta site before we go live Several Board approved club group leaders attended mini demonstrations of the site These demos were focused on showing the potential of a webpage in communicating to the PC community what a club or group has to offer Leaders were excited about the potential of making their 13 mission statements contact information schedules photos and other material available at the touch of a button They were among the first to view the change from the vertical menu on the left margin to a horizontal menu across the top with drop down categories There was unanimous agreement that this approach is easier on the eye and simpler to use The Communications Committee will be doing a demonstration for the Board during March We still need new photographs for the website In addition we are looking for beta site testers if you are interested in exploring the new site with a detailed eye to help catch glitches or design flaws we are interested in having you do so Let us know if you are interested in either of the above at pcwebsitereview gmail com or contact Erlinda Rejino at 518 728 5129 Folk Music Club Off to a Rousing Start Joel Leonard The Pelican Cove Folk Music Club has held three community sing a longs this winter season The first was the annual Holiday Sing a Long the week of Christmas In January and February there were very large audiences of enthusiastic folk music lovers melodically and loudly singing social protest songs 60 s style folk songs golden oldies ex Down by the Old Mill Stream camp songs ex Ain t Gonna Grieve My Lord No More and cowboy songs We typically introduce one or two new songs each month We have created our own books of folk songs that we pass out to the audience Even if you don t know the words you can sing along The PC Old Timey String Band a group of almost a dozen folk musicians forms the core of the musical background for each song as well as popular Appalachian style fiddle tunes I would like to acknowledge their contribution individually Guitarists Ben Kaplan Mike Palmer Peter Martinez and Karen Roth banjoist Tris Coffin Fiddlers Iris Livingston and Joel Leonard also mandolin Jack Livingston harmonica and pianists Iris Bergas and George Ubogy plus lead singers Mike Fallon and Marion Goldberg Our newest band member is Edna Coffin who is playing probably the most interesting instrument of all the Appalachian Hammered Dulcimer These musicians and interested singers meet almost weekly to swap songs rehearse old ones and work on words chords and harmony These sessions are open to all folk musicians Contact Joel Leonard 941 882 3093 to Percussionist Iris Bergas and her Dancing Dan Clogger find out the time and location of the next rehearsal The next and final accompany a spirited Fiddle tune Walter Barker Photo community sing a long of this season is Sunday March 22 at 7 30 p m in the Harbor Club

14 Meet Your Neighbor An Interview with Bernie Hamal Donna Anderson Bernie Hamal with outgoing Board President Murray Sherry after being honored at the Annual Picnic Connie Lang photo Those of us relatively new to Pelican Cove find it enlightening to chat with our long time residents Not only do we meet fascinating people but we have a chance to learn what has been so carefully and lovingly developed and entrusted to us I did just this last week meeting our retiring librarian Bernie Hamal at her lovely home of 37 years Bernie and her husband John rented on Siesta Key during the Easter season of 1978 While vacationing they saw a 2 page ad touting the new Morris development in South Sarasota Here the mature landscape and Wilbanks home gave invitation to a paradise they had yet to see in Florida even amidst the beams and trusses of ongoing construction When asked about the planned marina she said Well the hole was there I said to John that s going to be a harbor My husband said is it written in blood But to me this was the place Within two hours they had bought a unit on Pelican Point Drive closing scheduled for July of that year Back home in Michigan John surprised Bernie by taking early retirement In the stroke of a pen life started over in Pelican Cove on our Harbor where granddaughter Anne printed her name on the concrete floor Days were full As in most new developments residents wanted connection People chatted shared interests and organized John bought a second boat and was president of the Woodworkers Club Bernie volunteered She recreated her Grosse Pointe interests in horticulture and landscaping and served on and off the Grounds Committee for 8 years Although the development was lovely thanks to Morris s commitment to save a maximum number of trees more was needed First on the agenda a proper pathway demarcation to boardwalks around the cove and marina If you walk those lush and natural routes you will see her ideas at work MARCH 2015 Bernie began the tradition of planting flowering annuals wherever she found space along the banks of Clower Creek by Pelican Cove Road along the Cove We have her to thank for the pots of impatiens hanging from our mailboxes Can you imagine how many hooks we had to buy she asked with a laugh These annuals were the beginning of her beautification sub committee She bought them all that first year and carried buckets of water by car and on foot to ensure each little plant s health A Mahogany tree stands in front of her condo 30 plus feet tall and several in diameter Decades ago she nursed a small potted sapling transplanted it and then potted the seeds for future placement in Pelican Cove Several Michigan neighbors followed the Hamal s south Alice Wheeler a former Grosse Pointer and friend of 57 years was Bernie s daily walking partner Interested in personal health Alice and Bernie added structure to the water exercise group Proudly she explains that it is Alice s voice that remains on the recording taped 25 years ago and still used 3 times weekly at the Pavilion Pool Bernie and friends formed a bridge group another interest brought with her from Grosse Pointe Bridge was eventually moved to the Wilbanks and is still going strong today We also owe her a debt of gratitude for the holiday lights in December Her Grounds Committee began stringing them on lampposts as far as the harbor and along the gazebo roofline Those lights have multiplied to all lampposts the circumference of the harbor to boats kayaks the gatehouse and beyond This year even a parade of sorts brought Santa and 9 struggling kayaking reindeer around the marina to the strains of Santa Claus is Coming to Town Friend and fellow organizer Carol Wise started the Pavilion library 15 years ago She beat me out Bernie said chuckling so I became her assistant for two years As time passed Bernie replaced shelving that was fixed around the periphery of the room and that was too deep for maximum storage In its place she installed library style shelving sectioned for easy access Her team hung new magazine racks and Dee Hamill recovered the couch Dee did such a good job on that she said Due to failing eyesight Bernie retired last month Her daughter Carol Kristan also a Pelican Cover resident now takes up some of the slack of her mother s departure She also has a daughter Wendy living in Seattle three grandchild and four great grandchildren On the future her greatest hope is that we take care of what is here in Pelican Cove to consider sheltering the mailbox impatiens when temperatures dip and give a little water when things are too dry

MARCH 2015 15 Wildlife Spottings Virginia Tashian Recently during one twelve hour period in mid January I came across three diverse and fascinating wild creatures in Pelican Cove armadillo bobcat monarch butterfly While I was driving home from a performance late at night an armadillo crossed the main drive right in front of my car Perhaps that is not so unusual in PC but these are weird looking creatures who burrow and nest in soft ground under bushes and other dense ground cover They can scurry pretty fast on short legs and the Florida ones are usually of the nine banded variety Their name means little armored one in Spanish and they are native to South America and believed to have migrated to the southern US in the early 1900 s When they reproduce they invariably have identical quadruplets and such a group has been seen and photographed in PC in recent years Bobcats lynx rufus floridanus are not so often seen so it was surprising that one strolled nonchalantly along the grass swath above the harbor right under our lanai window around nine in the morning and according to my neighbor returned in the other direction soon after Normally nocturnal they prey on squirrels rabbits small raccoons and rats and live in wooded areas and scrub They are attractively marked tan with black stripes and spots about 3 feet long and have a distinctive tail They do not attack humans and only rarely small domestic pets The only other wild cat in Florida is the elusive much larger panther Finally the Monarch butterfly Such a pretty orange red with black species two or more seen on bushes very close to the Harbor Club by me as well as by grounds staff in the area and those en route to a lecture These butterflies migrate to Mexico from the north and normally return in swarms in March so these may be early or possibly living year round in this warm climate They are now an endangered species Photographers or those with camera phones if you happen upon PC wildlife please consider submitting a pic to PC News Please also share other wildlife encounters with your neighbors Connie s Corner from page 5 at the north side of the Bay Village property which is located to the south of the Maintenance Area There were 3 real estate sales in January as compared with 6 in January of 2014 There are 2 sales currently projected for February as compared to the 8 sales that occurred in February of 2014 There are currently 15 units listed for sale on the office list The auditors completed the field work for the 2014 financial audit in two days last week and will be completing the remainder of the audit remotely The auditors applauded our financial accounting for the past year and our successful preparations for the audit and expressed their appreciation for our conversion from using the TOPS accounting software to using the Quickbooks Pro accounting software At the request of a group of Pelican Cove owners I contacted the Engineer of Record for the Highway 41 improvements again He indicates that a Vamo Road sign will be re installed at the intersection and that a No Right Turn on Red sign will be re installed He indicates that the lighting that is installed on the east side of Highway 41 meets the lighting requirements for the intersection and that lighting is not installed on the west side of Highway 41 near the intersection because of the camera pole and the many utilities that are located in that area which include electricity lines Approximately 250 owners attended the Annual Meeting Picnic The weather was perfect
