MARCH 2018 President s Post By Bill McKay It has been a good year I have said this before but will say it again This is the best place I have ever lived and I have lived in some pretty good places over the years In addition and much to my surprise it has been a pleasure to have served as your president this past year It actually was a fairly easy job and quite honestly was a lot of fun though my wife might dispute that characterization It was so because Pelican Cove almost runs itself Our finances are very strong we have been able to maintain or increase our level of service with only a modest increase in maintenance fees We have well financed capital project and emergency funds The Board of Directors has worked efficiently and collaboratively We have a tremendous management team a first rate group of employees and a goodly number of highly involved residents I am sure I have not said it enough but I want to thank you all again for all your hard work that makes Pelican Cove such a special place These are what I consider the highlights of some of the events of the past year We almost had a real election for the Board of Directors this year maybe next year for sure A real democracy requires real elections In that same category of something that may finally happen you might even call it a miracle we might get a bit of a handle on speeding This summer we are installing a number of speed humps in those areas most affected by speeding We came through Irma with flying colors while Sarasota County took months to clean up Thanks again to our Pelican Cove employees One of the lessons learned was that although there may be many years between disasters like a hurricane eventually they do happen and you need to be ready There were things we could have done better to prepare and so we are reconstituting the Disaster Preparedness Committee We got a start on implementing some of the recommendations of the Climate Adaptation Plan We are well on our way to replanting the Australian Pine area as a Florida Friendly demonstration area We have involved our residents in a review of our mature tree and understory structure and I believe we are ready to make some needed improvements We are also close to having a plan to clean the debris and brush from Clower Creek so as to lessen the likelihood of flooding problems from heavy rain events These projects one of which is quite expensive are being paid for by our savings in the general fund so there is no need for special assessments We are continuing to do preemptive maintenance lessening the likelihood of a sudden disaster This year we cleaned and inspected all of our underground sewer laterals and relined any that had cracks We have consequently had a huge drop in the number of flushing issues The cost in excess of 100 000 was funded by our general fund which is not inexhaustible I might note I hope that next year s board is as fortunate as we have been Good luck to you 3 Board of Directors Committee Meetings BOD Committee meetings scheduled for the month of March Check Channel 195 the PC website or the office for any changes Board Workshop Tuesday March 20 9 30 a m Harbor Club Board of Directors Meeting Tuesday March 27 9 30 a m Harbor Club Bay Water and Environmental Committee Tuesday March 6 9 30 a m Wilbanks Ivy Room Building and Facilities Committee Friday March 2 9 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Communications Committee Monday March 5 9 30 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Cultural Events Committee Thursday March 1 3 p m Thursday March 22 3 p m Wilbanks Ivy Room Finance Committee Wednesday March 14 1 p m Wilbanks Conference Room Grounds Committee Wednesday March 14 9 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Harbor Committee Wednesday March 7 9 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Insurance Committee Friday March 16 9 30 a m Friday March 23 9 30 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Planning Committee Thursday March 8 9 30 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Rules Committee Monday March 19 9 30 a m Wilbanks Conference Room

MARCH 2018 Manager s Report By Jack Stevens General Manager February was a very busy and productive month at Pelican Cove One of our biggest accomplishments was completing the second phase of the restoration of our underground sewer system which was a project that took almost a year of planning to put into action Earlier this year we video inspected and jett cleaned all of our underground sewer laterals In February we epoxy lined and repaired the bad areas identified during the inspection to stop the deterioration of pipes and avoid future blockages due to roots getting in our system The combination of these projects have put us in a position today where our sewer lines are in better condition than they have been in for at least ten years and should serve us well for decades to come In addition to completing the sewer project we also improved an area that benefits anyone who utilizes our harbor area The steps leading from the Harbor Club area down to the harbor were removed and rebuilt The new stair system was upgraded to provide stairs that are not as steep as what was previously there and has an upgraded handrail system With the help of Mother Nature we also made improvements on our grounds Almost the entire month of February was very warm and felt like spring or even early summer Not only did our residents enjoy this weather but our trees and plants loved it Due to this exceptional weather and the efforts of our Grounds department to improve the overall condition of our plantings our forest and plants are green and healthy We also continued in our efforts to replace areas damaged last year with the new trees and understory installed near the front gate and the continuation of the design and preparation for future plantings in what was the Australian Pine area along the main road This month will have a couple key meetings that I hope many will be able to attend before owners start to head north We will have a community meeting with Comcast related to the new High Definition cable packages that will be available under our bulk contract In addition we expect to receive the next phase of the landscape architect s design for the buffer area along the main road in the coming weeks and will be looking for community feedback before the plans are finalized These meetings are scheduled for Comcast Friday March 30 10 a m Pavilion Landscape Monday March 19 2 p m Pavilion 5 EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR Name Mike Drum Position Lead Carpenter Employed May 6 2013 Hometown Nokomis FL Favorite Things about Pelican Cove This year has been my favorite due to the happy and kind homeowners after hurricane Irma Mike Drum General Manager Comments Mike Drum took on the role of lead carpenter at the end of 2016 and has built a highly effective team Mike s knowledge and carpentry skills along with his ability to work with and manage our fine carpenters provide PC with a level of quality and production that we should all be proud of Runner Up Abra Lannon Congratulations EMPLOYEE OF THE QUARTER Name Sheryn Deis Position Lead Customer Service Rep Employed Since January 7 2008 Hometown New Castle PA Favorite Things about Pelican Cove The residents of course Sheryn Deis they are like family to me my co workers are the best and working in this beautiful environment General Manager Comments Sheryn accomplishes many tasks for PC some obvious and many behind the scenes The most obvious is taking care of the front desk Our office is extremely busy with a constantly changing group of residents with different needs Sheryn consistently handles this high stress environment and still comes back to work the next day Runner Up Tim Steere

MARCH 2018 7 Robert and I had known each other for more than four years before we could even bring up the subject of marriage with my parents We expected very strong opposition and we got it Robert s determination and our patience finally wore them down and we were married and moved to the United States soon after That was 36 years ago This experience strongly shaped how we raised our two daughters Love has no boundaries and religion and race should never be a barrier between people Robert and Naseem Stecker Meet Your Neighbor Love Has No Boundaries By Naseem Stecker People have often asked us how my husband Robert and I met and I have repeated this story so many times that I thought it might be nice to put it on paper Indeed how did an M I T trained philosophy professor from New York meet and marry a woman of Pakistani heritage from Singapore It started when I decided at the age of 24 that I wanted to write a children s story that involved birds The only thing was that I hardly knew anything about these lovely creatures I wanted to speak with someone who could help me identify and talk knowledgeably about them A good friend of my younger sister who was at the University of Singapore told her about her new professor from the United States who was an avid birdwatcher I called him at his office and made an appointment to talk about birds His name was Robert Stecker The knock on his office door opened a whole new life for us We had so much to say to each other it was uncanny a soul mate from the other end of the world People often think that I was his student but I had actually graduated from the University of Singapore just a year before he came I was already working full time when we met Up to this point in my life I had always thought that I would remain a single professional woman dedicated to her work I loved my job in the newsroom of the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation as it was then called I wrote and edited television as well as radio news It was an exciting and fast paced world and every day was different My parents wanted to arrange a marriage for me but I would have none of it I told them that I was happy with my work and that I did not want to marry I would remain single I just could not bear the thought of an arranged union And that was truly how I felt and what I intended to do So they left me alone When I first started learning about birds I could hardly locate them in a bush Robert would patiently point them out to me Slowly I began to distinguish the different species and learned how to look for them They appeared on my radar so to speak It seems serendipitous that we have bought a place in this community called Pelican Cove We see that there s even a bird sanctuary here How delightful We are nature lovers and we can t help but admire the beautiful canopy of trees that makes this place feel like a protected preserve We also enjoy hiking and fishing good food and art music and theater Robert has been teaching at Central Michigan University for the past 35 years His area of interest in philosophy is aesthetics and he has an international reputation in the field As a result we have travelled the world especially Europe and Asia and stayed in Hong Kong A Fulbright in 2010 New Zealand Japan Beijing China and Australia because of invitations from leading universities to lecture about art and the theory of art He has written five books and numerous articles about these subjects I retired from my job in managing communications at the State Bar of Michigan a few years ago but strangely I feel that this move to Pelican Cove will be the actual start of my retirement We plan to be active and to take advantage of all that these gorgeous natural surroundings and warm weather will offer us and we look forward to making new friends in this artistic and unique community Ed Note Naseem and Robert Stecker moved to Pelican Cove in January and live at GL405 Please welcome them to our community MOVIE NIGHT By Earl Kaplan Two movie nights this month Sunday March 4 and Sunday March 18 at 7 p m at the Pelican Pavilion Watch for more information on Channel 195 or the PC website www pelicancovecondo com Movie Nights are open to all residents and are sponsored by the PC Social Club
