MAY 2015 3 President s Post BOARD COMMITTEE MEETINGS By Gary Gulden President The lovely spring weather continues here at PC accompanied by the increasing northern migration of our snowbirds including the Guldens While our program activities start shifting toward their quieter summer mode there remain some important business activities that I want to keep you informed about By now most PC owners have learned that the proposal to amend our Declaration of Condominium to limit ownership of PC units by other than residents or resident controlled entities received yes votes in excess of the required adoption threshold of two thirds of all unit owners What I would like to draw attention to however is not the result but rather the degree of participation in that vote and the effort required to obtain that level In all 570 votes were cast meaning that 160 owners or over 20 percent chose not to participate in spite of two waves of very vigorous get out the vote efforts by the staff and a sizeable group of volunteers led by the Planning Committee It is concerning that so much effort is needed to motivate owner response to matters of community concern At the recent Annual Meeting where the results were announced the Planning Committee was urged to extract the lessons learned from this experience by documenting all of the various obstacles encountered in this effort and assessing the effectiveness of the various forms and channels of communication involved We look forward to their findings and recommendations Committee meetings scheduled for the month of May Check Channel 195 the PC website or the Office for any changes Board Workshop Tuesday May 12 1 30 p m Harbor Club Board of Directors Meeting Tuesday May 19 1 30 p m Pelican Pavilion B F Committee Friday May 8 9 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Finance Committee Friday May 22 9 30 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Harbor Committee Wednesday May 6 9 a m Harbor Club Elsewhere in this issue is a report of higher than budgeted costs for our 2015 2016 flood insurance Again I draw your attention not to the instance but to the policy and practice the Association has long ago adopted to cushion the impact of such unanticipated increases in insurance expenses The total cost of PC s insurance policies for fire windstorm flood liability and commercial crime is the single largest item in our budget representing more than 25 percent And despite best efforts by our staff Finance Committee and insurance agents insurance premiums especially for windstorm and flood protection are notoriously difficult to forecast Mother Nature is a principal culprit but so are state and federal agency decisions and the ebb and flow of capital into the insurance and reinsurance marketplaces To help absorb the impact of this uncertainty the association has established The Insurance Renewal Fund continued on page 11 Hurricane Preparedness Hurricane Season Starts June 1 As soon as Sarasota County issues a tropical storm or hurricane warning residents must remove all outdoor objects patio furniture hanging pots grills hoses plants decorative items and other unsecured items These must be moved inside to limit the amount of flying debris Fire Department regulations do not permit storage of propane tanks in apartments EMPTY propane tanks can be stored in a carport storage area If you do not have a carport storage area EMPTY propane tanks must be chained to the carport post Full tanks should be emptied If it is necessary for the Pelican Cove staff to remove such items the owners will be fined 100 per storm plus the costs of item removal Now is the time to make your evacuation plans Don t wait to gather your supplies bottled water nonperishable food first aid kit etc If you will need assistance evacuating your unit it is important that you pre register by calling the Sarasota County Special Needs Registration at 941 861 5000

MAY 2015 7 PC Coffee Programs Review and Preview By Janet Hasselbring Angel Trumpet By Veronica Tcherevkoff Pelican Cove is host to a number of shrubs trees and plants I doubt I would have given a second glance to the spindly tree that was growing along the drive a short distance from the Gatehouse if it had not been for a delicious sweet fragrance that wafted through my car window one night last week I stopped and gazed in amazement at the 9 10 inch blooms that covered the tree they resembled huge inverted Easter Lilies The fragrance was almost overwhelming A handy plaque named the tree as Datura Arborea or Angel Trumpet I decided to dig further This tree is part of the Brugmansia family It hales from South America where for many generations the plant was used for medicinal purposes The leaves were applied externally for skin conditions and joint pain in the form of a poultice The fruit is extremely toxic containing scopolamine hyoscyamine and atropine In small doses the juice of the fruit was used to treat pain insomnia allergies and digestive problems In large quantities it was used to drug the widows who were to be burned along with their recently dead husband The extreme evening fragrance attracts the moths needed for pollination Who knew that a tree with such a past was growing among us Nature is a marvel Security Reminder Please be sure to lock your vehicles and your doors before retiring for the evening After a hiatus of several years a number of vehicles were broken into over the weekend of April 26 27 One vehicle was stolen The gatehouse attendant was able to give the sheriff a description of the driver of the stolen vehicle Looking back Thanks to your generous donations the Coffee Programs Committee was able to send contributions to the following organizations represented by this season s speakers Rotarians for Hearing Dangers of Living with Hearing Loss by Ellen Haggarty Peace River Wildlife Refuge Center The Bird in all of Us by Larry Monat Sarasota Academy of the Arts Musical Revue by students Children s Aid Society Museums In and Out by Ralph Schiller and the Seniors vs Crime Project Office of the FL Attorney General Seniors vs Crime by Fred Traub Thanks to Betty Mitchell our treasurer Judy Jones for the marvelous goodies Ette Wurtzel and Mary Bates Amundson for the beautiful floral arrangements Pat Klugherz brochures and Annette Zaffiro Donna Anderson Roz Kalinowski and Marilou Cannici greeters hostesses Finally thanks to all of you who supported our programs Looking Ahead Coffee Programs 2015 2016 Our World Our Community Ourselves November 2015 An Historic Spanish Point Coffee with Bertha Palmer Learn about the history and culture of this historic landmark and its place in the settling of Sarasota January 2016 A History of Pelican Cove with historian John Adler A resident of Pelican Cove since its beginnings John will share the history of our relationships with our neighbors Bay Village the Eide property and Benderson and the negotiations that occurred over the years February 2016 The Art of Simplifying Your Life Learn the psychological and practical implications of purging your stuff with Andy Rousseau downsizeologist March 2016 Just in time for spring training Jackie Robinson and Paul Robeson COLLISION with Mark Altschuler baseball devotee and aficionado Mark will share the presentation he gave at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown NY a few years ago March 2016 SELAH Freedom with Elizabeth Fisher CEO of Sarasota chapter Florida ranks third in the nation in sex trafficking and Sarasota is second in the state It seems impossible and totally incongruous that Sarasota a mecca for arts and culture is a major venue for sex trafficking Find out what is being done to save our children and how you can get involved If you show mercy unto the least of these To be scheduled a return evening performance by students from the Sarasota Academy of the Arts Stay tuned

MAY 2015 8 Meet Your Neighbor Sue Spicer By Donna Anderson Sue Spicer and her dog Mason are regular faces on the streets and pathways of Pelican Cove Mason a big young goldador pup half lab and half golden retriever needs to be worked Sue enjoys experiencing the surrounding nature It s beautiful in here from what I hear and I can hear the birds and touch the plants and smell the flowers so it s beautiful to me too They walk together several times daily A chat with Sue is laced with asides to her good looking dog Highly educated Sue holds Bachelor s and Master s degrees in Music Education and in Social Work Life began however with lower expectations What they say is that I weighed 2 pounds when I was born You d never know it now she adds with a grin But I was born at home in the country in Arkansas in a little bitty town that I m sure wasn t even incorporated at the time they didn t put the drops in my eye and I developed a staph infection so I ve been blind since birth Her blindness has never held Sue back The doctor told her parents about a possible opportunity and young Sue was taken to Little Rock to reside at the Arkansas School for the Blind After graduation she attended Henderson State College receiving her first Bachelor s degree She began teaching music far from home setting her on a life track of travel and service I taught 5 years in South Dakota the School for the Blind and Visually Impaired music all twelve grades It was cold cold She loved teaching Then she decided to get a master s at a little college in Aberdeen teaching there as well Sue met her husband while in South Dakota and they married in 1972 His wife died and we got together and as they say the rest is history We traveled a lot Mason lay down you don t do that in front of people that s not nice Let s scratch your tummy We moved to Casper Wyoming and I saw that they had an extension program in social work My husband had just had a heart attack and I became interested in it especially hospital social work and so I went and got a bachelor s at the University of Wyoming Her graduation was followed by a move to Illinois to be nearer her then ill stepdaughter Soon however Sue had extra time I discovered that Champagne had a Master s Program in Social Work She completed it and began working with the chronically mentally ill I loved social work Sue says The only thing you have to remember about the chronically mentally ill is you re going to see improvement and then you re going to see a back slide because of the nature of the condition They ll quit taking their medications because they think they are better Then I taught adult services rehab And I worked with people who were 55 and over and who were visually impaired And oh yes you saw lots of progress there And that is always rewarding I remember one time especially I went down to get a Diet Coke This man who was not well enough to be any place but day treatment said May I help you get what you d like to drink I could have very well gotten it for myself but I said You know what I d really appreciate that So I gave him the money and he got it for me And he was so pleased because he could do something for somebody else I ll never forget that You think you re helping them and sometimes helping them is letting them help you The decision to move to Sarasota was multi faceted Warm temperatures a closer proximity to her sister Kay the 24 hour manned gate house here Pelican Cove University and other programs were factors in choosing our neighborhood Yet retirement has given Sue little time to participate in the daytime activities She is an elected member of her church s board with duties including a lot of visiting and phone calls She s also a member of the Lion s Club of Venice She lunches with a group of puppy raisers weekly and on Wednesday mornings she attends a craft class where she weaves beautiful freeform blue ribbon winning baskets I crochet I play the piano read I watch TV I say I watch TV because you talk the way normal people do you don t come up with special speech for people who are blind I sing in the church choir and play piano for my own amazement and amusement Once in a while I ll play for a nursing home She would play more if she could still reliably memorize music You have to memorize it measure for measure she says because you can t read with one hand and play with both If I could still play classical I would love that And I love to crochet She crochets lap robes for veterans in Tampa and on Tuesday s joins a knit and sew group at church There she stuffs pillows for cancer patients that need cushions to hold after surgery In March Sue and Mason joined many others in Payne Park for the Southeastern Guide Dog Walkathon While final amounts raised will not be known until later this month she more than met her pledge goal Sue enjoys treks to museums and other exhibitions Sculpture is wonderful She s found that some attractions provide Braille maps but going with friends who explain what is continued on page 12

MAY 2015 11 Kayak Storage Forum By Virginia Tashian An Open Forum hosted by the Harbor Committee on April 20 attracted an audience of close to 80 While many appeared to be from Far Harbor there were also residents from other areas in PC Following several months of exploring and researching options the HC shared five ways to meet the continuing demand for more kayak storage space each with a greater level of difficulty beginning with the easiest to complete Three of the five options focused on better utilizing the existing storage site at Clower Creek without having to develop a brand new site or invade another neighborhood However one option did suggest building new storage immediately across the bridge to Far Harbor Another option arising from Management proposes to build a platform or decking over water in the northeast corner of the harbor After the presentation the floor was opened for residents to share their views and suggestions Over 20 residents expressed opinions Speakers came almost equally from inside and outside Far Harbor The primary concerns were safety increased foot traffic over a narrow bridge where visibility is already a problem and parking Many of those present commended the HC for the wide range of options considered and the hard work involved The topic will be again discussed at the Harbor Committee meeting on May 6 before recommendations if any are made to the Board Social Club President s Post from page 3 Contributions from our monthly maintenance fees are made to the Insurance Renewal Fund each month so that we have enough cash available to make our premium payments when they come due and avoid the cost of financing those payments with the insurance companies However the fund has also been designed to have a significant amount of money in it currently in excess of 500 000 at the lowest point of its annual cash flow From time to time criticism has been leveled at the practice of having this amount of money standing in reserve However it is vital to understand that it is this available reserve of funds that is drawn upon in situations like we face with this year s unanticipated increase in our flood premiums allowing us to avoid emergency assessments or severe cuts in our services to balance the budget PC Climate Change Seminar from page 4 By Ro Forgie Save the date for the Memorial Day weekend Sunday May 24 The Pelican Cove Social Club will host a tribute to all veterans Details on location and time will soon to be announced This will be the last formal event until the end of September IN MEMORIAM We mourn the passing of Joe Kaster HA 103 March 24 We extend our sincerest sympathy to their family and friends New Owners May NEWCOMER UNIT FROM CITY STATE COUNTRY Robert Campbell Jane Belopolsky BA158 Trumbull CT 06611 William Erwin GL345 Bourbon IN 46504 David Sylvia Feinburg BA154 New York NY 10025 Everett Mary Gendler TR137 Great Barrington MA 01230 Peter Grebot Patricia GL461 Totnes UK TQ9 5RP Harmon Bonnie Pollock HA233 Salem Virginia 24153 Irene Rhodes HA212 Princeton NJ 08540 Jacqueline Roose HA212 Darnius Spain Guillaume Ruff Antoinette Aellen HA115 Geneva Switzerland 3 Existing legislation is inadequate to deal with the severe social and economic dislocations that are being brought on by climate change drought in the Pacific Northwest increase in food prices due to shortages and potential remedies leaving coal and oil in the ground and using non combustible energy sources An interdisciplinary Congressional task force is needed to recommend legislation that could deal with these problems effectively Mr Bilyeu attentively took notes asked for some clarifications and pledged to pass on these concerns to Congressman Buchanan Our group requested a follow up visit to the office with greater interactive dialogue between them and ourselves We also made an appointment with the office s district director
