When requested by the Editor or President, an Editorial Review Board composed of the Editor, the President, and three owners will judge the suitability of questionable letters or articles by majority vote. The address for the News is:Pelican Cove News1615 Pelican Point DriveSarasota, FL 34231-6721(941) 966-5674Editorial email: pcneditors@gmail.comAdvertising email: leslie@pelicancovecondo.comWebsite: www.pelicancovecondo.comPC Office email: pelicancove@comcast.netTo the Editor WhilewalkingalongPelicanPointDriveearlythismorning,Monday,October10,IcameupontwoworkersfromSarasotaCountywhowerebusyatoneofourwastewaterpumpstations.Istoppedtoseewhattheyweredoingandoneofthemtoldmethattheywerethereattemptingtogetoneofthepumpsworkingagain.Theyhadpulledthepumpoutofthepitwithacraneattachedtotheirtruck. Atthatpoint,theotherworkerheldupsomemedicalIVtubinghehadjusttakenoutofthepump.Heexplainedthatthetubinghadwrappedaroundthepumpshaft,causingtheshafttostopturning,whichoverheatedthepumpmotorandtrippedacircuitbreaker.Whenapumpquitsworking,sewagebeginstobackupinthecollectionpitandanautomaticalarmissenttosummonarepaircrew. Theworkerexplainedthattheproblemisthatpeopleareputtingthingsdowntheirtoiletsthatshouldbeputinthetrash.Forinstance,inthiscase,IVtubingisplasticandwillnotbiodegradeanditcandamagethewastewatersystem.Infact,IVtubingisbiomedicalwasteandshouldbedisposedofinthetrashinaccordancewiththeinstructionsprovidedbythemedicalsupplieroftheitems. Theworkersaidanothercommonitemtheyndfoulingthepumpsisdoggiepoopbags.Theyarenotbiodegradableeitherandcanclogthepumps.Repairsareexpensiveandthereisalwaysachancethewastefromapumpingstationwilloverowontoourpropertyandintothesurroundingwater. Thebottomline(literally)issimple:donotputanythinginyourtoiletexcepthumanwaste.Anyotheritemsshouldbeputinyourtrash.Doingsowillhelpreducerepaircostsandhelpprotectourenvironment.Frank Carter, HA233To the Editor Overtheyears,anumberofresidentshavechosento‘AgeinPlace’.Theirneighborstypicallyaremorethanwillingtohelpthemoutandthereareanumberofservicesinthecountythatprovideassistance.Initially,thingsusuallygowell.WhileweallknowPelicanCoveisauniquecommunityandneighborsarewillingtohelpeachother,thathelpcanonlygosofar.Onseveraloccasionsthesepastfewmonths,neighborshavebeenfoundoutsidetheirhomesdisoriented,confusedandindangeroussituations.Somethingwentwrongandtheydidnothaveaplanifsuchathinghappened.Whenthatsomethinghappens,theusualresultissomeonecallstheofceorthesheriff.Unfortunately,neitherisabletodomuchmorethandealwiththeimmediatesituationwhichtypicallyistocallanambulance.WecannotrelyonthePCcommunitytoprovideassistedlivingsupport.Therearemanyprofessionalsinourareathatcancontinued on page 12

3NOVEMBER 2016President’s PostBy Gary GuldenDearNeighbors, Thepresidentialelectionwillbehistorysoon,andinthisseasonofthanksgiving,somewillbethankfulandothersnotabouttheoutcome.(ThoughIdaresaymostwillbethankfulforanendtothecampaignseason!)Onethingseemscertaintome,though,andthatishowmuchweallhavetobethankfulfortoliveinaplaceaswonderfulanduniqueasPelicanCove.Thebeautyofoursurroundings;therichnessofourprogramofferings;theskillanddedicationofourmanagementandstaffmemberswhostriveeverydaytokeepourbusinessaffairsandourbuildingsandgroundsinnecondition;andacommunityofneighborsandfriendswithvariedbackgrounds,talents,andinterestswhosecompanywecanenjoy,andwhosegenerosityasvolunteersbenetsusallincountlessways. Tobesure,allisnotsweetnessandlightinallofourlivesallthetime.Anditiseasyforthechallengesorfrustrationsofday-to-daylivingtogetinthewayofourenjoymentoflife.Butonceaday,ifyoucan,stopandlookaroundyouasyougoabouttheCovetoappreciatewhatwehavehere.Takeamomenttothankastaffmemberorvolunteer.Andpatyourselfonthebackforyourwisdomandgoodfortuneinchoosingtolivehere!Board of Directors/ Committee MeetingsBOD/Committee meetings scheduled for the month of November. 4NOVEMBER 2016Committee Doings, OctoberB&WE – October 13  Therstmeetingofthisfall’sBay& Water Environmental Committee tookplaceinthePavilionat9:30a.m.Unfortunately,therewasnoQuorum.Asofnow,thecommitteeismadeupofelevenvolunteers.Onlyvewerepresent;OnieMorse,LarryWolf,PeterStults,JudithKazenandEwaHammer.Thegroupdiscussedtheadaptationstudyandhowwecanraiseawareness.ItwasdecidedtoassistPelicanCovemanagementinpresentingMr.Beever’splansforAnAdaptationStudyonClimateChangeforPelicanCoveonWednesday,October26.ThecommitteewillalsoaskJanetHasselbringtoarrangeacoffeehourpresentationonMarch17,2017.Themeetingwasadjournedat10:41a.m.Finance – October 5 TheCommitteemetforanaldiscussionofthepreliminarybudgetthathadbeenpresentedbyGeneralManagerJackStevensandSarahMetcalf.Thecommitteeunanimouslypassedtheproposedbudgetwitha1.2%maintenancefeeincrease.ThebudgetwillbepresentedtotheboardattheOctober18boardmeeting. ThecommitteealsounanimouslyapprovedaresolutiontoagainretainCavanaugh&CoLLP,CertiedPublicAccountantstoperformtheauditofnancialstatementsfortheyearendingDecember31,2016. ThenextmeetingoftheFinanceCommitteeisNovember14at1p.m.Harbor – October 5 Administrationreportsthat34boatslipsandvekayakracksavailable,with21onthekayakrackwaitinglist.Thecommitteediscussedhowtodealwithlatepaymentsofkayakrackfees.FollowuponHermineshowedthatagoodjobwasdoneprotectingharborandstoragefacilities.WebbinginstalledattheBayPointlaunchsitewillberemoved as it is not holding small stonesinplaceduringheavyrunoff.Old business concerning cleaning of theClowerCreekweirsbytheCounty.AdministrationwilladdressthisissuefurtherwiththeCounty.ModicationoftheRulesWeBoatBywillbesubmittedtotheBOD.Themasterplanfortheharborwasdiscussedwithtwosub-committeesformed.Planning – October 13 ChairmanBrianBaxteraskedabout the status of the Climate Change AdaptionStudysinceithasamajorroleinthecommittee’sLongRangePlanningReport.Subcommitteeworkontheplanisprogressingwellandtheyexpecttomaketheirgoalofcompletionintimefortheannualmeeting. Akeyfactoristoensuretheentirecommunityisawareofthecontentsoftheplan,sooverthenextfewmonthstheyplantomeetwiththecommitteechairs,attendtheNovemberBoardofDirector’sworkshopandconductatown-halltypemeetingforallresidentsinDecemberorJanuary.Rules – October 17 AquorumwaspresentandtheminutesoftheSeptembermeeting wereapproved. ChairLeaBuschgansreportedonprogressoftheproposedPelicanCovebudgetasitmovestowardapproval. RulesviolationsfromApriltoSept.2016werereportedbyLeslie.Mostviolationswereparkingviolations. StatusoftheNeighbortoNeighborDisputeMediationProgramwasdiscussedTheprogramisunderutilizedandtheRulesCommitteewillaskthatmorepublicityabouttheservicebeplacedintheofceandon bulletinboards. TheonlynewbusinesswaschangesandadditionstoTRWLB.Thereweresofewthatthecommitteeapprovedtheitemsdiscussed.Leawillemailthecorrected versions to the members not presentincasetheyhaveany additionalcomments.Culinary Club Opening EventBy Helene Crawford and Bernie Lofchie OurCulinaryClubopeningeventwillbeheldatWilbanksonThursday,December15,from4p.m.-7p.m.Atthismeetingwewillselectthethemesforthe2016-2017season. Pleasebringanappetizerthatyouhavemadeandabeverageofyourchoice. Ifyouplantoattend,pleaseemailBernieLofchieatblofchie@gmail.com. BernieandIlookforwardtoseeingyouthere.

6NOVEMBER 2016Adaptation StudyBy Jack Stevens, General Manager Asacoastalcommunity,PelicanCoveisvulnerabletotheeffectsofhurricanes,tropicalstorms,andextratropicalstorms.Climateprojectionssuggestpossibleincreasesinthestrengthandintensityofthesestorms,aswellas,sea-levelrisewhichwillincreasethelikelihoodofoodevents.WearealsoanenvironmentallyfriendlycommunityandconcernedaboutthehealthoftheLittleSarasotaBayWatershedandthewaterqualityinClowerCreekandLittleSarasotaBay. PelicanCovehascommissionedtheSouthwestFloridaRegionalPlanningCouncil(SWFRPC)foraStudyandAdaptationPlantoprovideuswithaclearroadmapforaddressingtheseissues.ThisprojectbeganinlateOctoberwithourrstmeetingwithJimBeeverofSWFRPCatthePelicanPavilion.Mr.Beeverreviewedthetwophasesoftheproject,identifyingvulnerabilitiesasphaseone,anddeterminingadaptationstomitigatethepotentialdamagefromthosevulnerabilitiesasphasetwo.Heexpressedtheneedforownerinvolvementinidentifyingspecicareasthecommunityisconcernedaboutduringtherstphaseandprovidingfeedbackonadaptationswecanadoptduringthesecondphaseoftheproject.TherewerealotofgreatquestionsposedatthemeetingandwhileMr.Beeverrespondedtothemhisteammemberwasmakingnoteofeachonetoinsureitwasaddressedappropriatelyinthestudy.Ownerinvolvementiscriticaltotheoverallsuccessoftheprojectandyourcontinuedparticipationisneeded. Thereareafewwaysyoucanparticipateinthisprocess.ThePresidenthasestablishedanadvisorygroup,headedupbyourVicePresident,andcomprisedofrepresentativesfromthevecommitteesmostinvolvedwiththeareasbeingaddressed,theseare:Bay&WaterEnvironmental,BuildingsandFacilities,Grounds,Harbor,andPlanning.ThesecommitteeswillbediscussingPelicanCove’sconcernsattheirregularlyscheduledmeetingsandtheseareagreatopportunityforindividualowner’stohavetheirideasheard.IfyoucannotattendacommitteemeetingthereisaformattheofceandonourwebsitewhereyourconcernscanbeexpressedandwewillincorporatethemintothefeedbackweprovideMr.Beever.Duringphasetwooftheproject,theAdaptationPlan,Mr.Beeverwillmeetwiththeadvisorygroup,theircommittees,andthecommunitytoworkthroughwhichplansmaybesttPelicanCove’sneeds.IN MEMORIAMWe mourn the passing ofName Unit On DateAlbert Berenberg HA136 August 31Marshall Howard BA244 October 20 We extend our sincerest sympathy to their family and friends.Office NotesBOD & Committee MeetingsThe Board of Directors and Committee meetings are back, after taking the summer off. Agendas must be posted 72 hours prior to a scheduled meeting. Please check PC’s “official bulletin boards”, located at the PC Office, the Harbor Club and the Pelican Pavilion for agendas and cancellations. Notices are also posted on Community Channel 195 and on the PC website at www.pelicancovecondo.com. Holiday DecorationsDecorations may be put up from December 1 to January 7 of each year, seasonal decorations, including lighting, may be placed on the outside walls of the condominium units and the bushes adjacent to the Unit. The stairway to the upper levels may be decorated, provided that joint users of the stairs have no objection. Limited Common Elements, excluding carports, may be decorated. No decorations may exceed the height of the roof or be placed on the roof. Information BoxThe Pelican Cove Information Box is located on the front porch of the PC Office. This box gives residents 24/7 access to important PC info and will save you time in not having to go into the PC Office.The Information Box contains: The Rules We Live By, the current PC News, a monthly calendar of events, lists of units for sale and lease, a list of after-hours workers, the “Checklist Before Leaving” information and Work Order forms.

BillhasaPhDinAfricanHistory.HereceivedaFulbrightFellowshiptodoresearchinKenyaontheprecolonialhistoryoftheSwahilipeople.HisthesisdiscussedthedevelopmentofpoliticalinstitutionsonthesouthernKenyacoastpriortocolonialrule,andhemasteredseveraldialectsinordertodotheresearch.Whilethere,Billmethisfuturewife,Rita Breen.“ShelivedinthisgreatplaceuparoundNairobi;Iliveddowninthislittlevillageonthecoast.Shehadmuchbetterdigs.” TheyboughtaplaceinWinchester,MA,an18thcenturyfarmhouse.“Itwasawreck.OhmyGod,itwasawful.”ThefarmbroughtBilltheretirementhewanted,however.Hegottomakeandgrowthings.BorntomaternalgrandparentswhoimmigratedfromAbruzzoand“workedmelikeadog,”BillpesteredfriendsvacationinginItaly.Hewantedseedsthatgrewvegetablesasavorfulasthosehisfamilyenjoyedonthefarm.Withthatbooty,hegiftedseveralpacketstohisbrotherwhohadcontinuedfarminganddealtinproduce.Customerslovedthem.Hisbrotherwantedmore,andbecauseBillwasoneofthefewpeoplewhoknewhowtouseacomputer,hebeganthesearch.OneofthecompaniesaskedhimtodistributetheirproductsintheU.S.“Theywereobviouslyprettydesperate.Ikeptsayingno,butIwoundupdoingit.Iinvested$5000bucks,anditworked.”Diditever.Hegothisinvestmentbackmanytimesover,andhadfun.“Imean,youdealwithpeoplewholikeyourstuff…wholoveyourstuff!Notmanybusinessesdothat.”AsfounderandownerofSeedsfromItaly,BillwasinvitedtodoaguestappearanceonTheMarthaStewartShow.Thatvideoisstillavailableonherwebsite,andgivesasmallwindowintohiszestfortheresultingyields. WhenBillsoldthebusinessandRitaretired,hisplanwastobuyalittlefarmandraisepigs.“Youcanimaginehowthatwentover.”Ritadidherhomeworkand“latchedontoSarasota.”WhentheyfoundPelicanCove,thedealwasdone.Heknewlittleabouttheamenitieshere,allthepossibilities.Hehadgivenuphistruckandideasoffarming,thenfoundthelocalcommunitygardens.Ontherstsite,hisgardenooded.“Iwasjustsobummedout.Ihadthisgreatgarden.Icameback,andtherewerethosewhitebirdseatingfrogs.”HenowbelongstoacommunitygardeninNokomis.Theonlydown side–hecan’tridehisbiketogetthere.
