OCTOBER 2015 2 PC NEEDS YOU PC NEWS OCTOBER ISSUE DEADLINES Articles Friday Oct 16 Advertising Tuesday Oct 20 Editorial Staff Editor Alice Hawrilenko Features Editor Donna Anderson Proofreaders Nancy Arnzen Leny Cohen Judy Katz Linda Ritt Cartoonist Jean Gomoll Board Liaison Lisa Yellin Production Leslie Walter Board President Gary Gulden The Pelican Cove News is published periodically by the Board of Directors of the Pelican Cove Condominium Association primarily to keep Association members informed on matters bearing on their use and enjoyment of their Pelican Cove property Members of the Association are invited to suggest items for publication Deadline for advertising is the 20th of each month The Pelican Cove News is published monthly except for the summer when it is published bimonthly The address for the News is Pelican Cove News 1615 Pelican Point Drive Sarasota FL 34231 6721 941 966 5674 Editorial email pcneditors gmail com Advertising email leslie pelicancovecondo com Website www pelicancovecondo com PC Office email pelicancove comcast net Government Neighborhood Liaison Committee Formed By Ruth Brandwein and Richard Weingarten A major new development is in the works for the parcel of land just north of Eide property This development will impact traffic on the congested Tamiami Trail and potentially the water quality in Little Sarasota Bay To address this concern Board President Gary Gulden has appointed Ruth Brandwein to form and chair an ad hoc Government and Neighborhood Liaison Committee to mobilize a community response In 2006 Mr Eide sold part of his property about 31 acres some 18 acres of which border on US 41 with the remaining 13 acres fronting on Little Sarasota Bay Both parcels were rezoned over our objections to enable formerly prohibited retail commercial and multi residential use The then developer had proposed a 3 branch mid rise condo building facing the Bay and 210 000 sq feet of retail in a two or three story building or buildings facing US 41 with comparable space on the upper floor or floors for mixed use office and residential use The County Commission acknowledged our concerns about traffic congestion and water runoff to the extent that it rejected some of the developer s retail space and building height requests The final ordinance provided for 110 000 sq feet of retail with no retailer allowed more than 50 000 sq ft and a minimum of 55 dwelling units Then came the recession and the developer abandoned the project and its interest in the parcels it had paid 29 7 million to purchase Now a successor owner has appeared to proceed with the project The new developer seeks permission to erect substantially more residential units higher buildings and more concrete for parking more cars than the 2006 zoning change granted According to The Observer 9 3 15 Exceptions and ordinance changes to be proposed include a special exception to increase the maximum height for two of the buildings to 51 feet and allowances to build two multifamily buildings on a property zoned commercial general This proposed development along with the one at the corner of Stickney Point Road and 41 and the new extension of KIA Motors just north of us on the east side of 41 threatens to turn the congested highway into more of a parking lot than it already is It also threatens the already environmentally challenged Little Sarasota Bay with the additional runoff that comes with paving the land The land which is adjacent to the County s Bayonne Nature Preserve housing an eagle s nest has been called by public officials the most beautiful in Sarasota REMINDER County The Committee s challenge is enormous and continued on page 8 Daylight Savings Time Ends Sunday November 1 Don t forget to set your clocks back Letters to the Editor The Pelican Cove News will consider publishing letters to the Editor When requested by the Editor or President an Editorial Review Board composed of the Editor the President and three owners will judge the suitability of questionable letters or articles by majority vote Letters must be no longer than 250 words The editor may condense letters to save space while preserving the essential substance Letters must be signed and must not defame or malign individuals or groups Letters that contain errors of fact will be returned to authors for correction after which they will be considered for publication
OCTOBER 2015 3 President s Report I begin my report by confirming four committee appointments that it was necessary for me to make since the last time the Board met At that last Board meeting a special meeting of the Board on August 11 I announced the formation of a General Manager Search Committee and the appointment of Lisa Yellin as its Chair As it was essential that the full complement of members of that committee be in place for the committee to begin its important work I subsequently appointed the following additional members Gordon Amundson Virginia Greenawalt Bill McKay and Linda Wolf In addition I am also pleased to announce the appointment of Judy Limekiller as a new member of the Finance Committee Our system of strong and effective standing committees is central to our governance and to maintaining the qualities we value in the way Pelican Cove is run I offer my sincere thanks to these new committee members and to all those who generously dedicate their time energies and capabilities to the work of our committees Welcome back to those of you who are returning for the season Much has changed while you were away Our General Manager Connie Lang has moved on to a new opportunity and our Building and Maintenance Coordinator Jack Stevens has taken charge as Acting General Manager More visibly a wide array of summer projects have been completed or are nearing completion including most notably the renovation of the Harbor Club fitness facility and the reconfiguration of the Clower Creek kayak storage area On the other hand you could look at these changes and conclude that in the most important ways things are proceeding as expected The day to day operation and management of Pelican Cove are continuing to run smoothly in the hands of our highly competent and dedicated staff and we have grown accustomed to the small and large improvements to our facilities and grounds that our talented workers create for us over the course of every summer season We are fortunate to have such a fine team looking after Pelican Cove Please take the time to thank them when you see them September s board agenda was brief but I would like to draw your attention to the item concerning the launch of a redesigned Pelican Cove website This is the product of a multi year effort involving a considerable number of volunteers and members of our office staff initiated by the Communications Committee and led by Erlinda Rejino This is no minor achievement The effort involved in dealing with the challenges of satisfying our community s broad range of interests expectations and computer literacy has been superbly managed and far outweighs the technical demands of the project We are most grateful to Erlinda and her team for bringing about such a major improvement to this important community information resource Finally the process of creating the 2016 Pelican Cove budget is well underway This has involved many hours of staff effort over the course of the summer and is now in the hands of the Finance Committee for their review and recommendations to the Board An essential part of that review involves the Finance Committee s annual Budget Workshop which took place Wednesday September 30 at 1 p m in the Pavilion and provided an opportunity for the community to have insight and input into the coming year s budget BOARD OF DIRECTORS COMMITTEE MEETINGS BOD Committee meetings scheduled for the month of October Check Channel 195 the PC website or the Office for any changes Board of Directors Workshop Tuesday October 13 1 30 p m Harbor Club Board of Directors Meeting Tuesday October 20 1 30 p m Pelican Pavilion Bay Water Environmental Committee Thursday October 15 9 30 a m Wilbanks Ivy Room Buildings Facilities Committee Friday October 9 9 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Finance Committee Wednesday October 7 9 30 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Harbor Committee Wednesday October 7 9 a m Wilbanks Ivy Room Planning Committee Thursday October 15 9 30 a m Wilbanks Conference Room Rules Committee Monday October 19 9 30 a m Wilbanks Conference Room MOVIE NIGHT Earl Kaplan Two movie nights this month Sunday October 4 and Sunday October 18 at 7 p m at the Pelican Pavilion Watch for more information on Channel 195 or the PC website www pelicancovecondo com Movie Nights are open to all residents and are sponsored by the PC Social Club
OCTOBER 2015 4 2015 Fall Kayak Schedule More Kayak Storage By Frank Rivera By Dee Tashian Hello all you kayakers Welcome to fall in Southwest Florida In response to the extraordinary demand from residents for additional kayak storage work to expand the storage Temporary Kayak Storage site at Clower Creek is near completion The site will be totally reconfigured to accommodate 63 more storage spaces using a plan developed by the Harbor Committee and approved by the Board of Directors This project will take care of a major portion of residents now on the waiting list but the wait list continues to grow New lease fees will create an additional revenue stream for Pelican Cove This year two club members Erlinda Rejino and Terry McCormick have been working hard to create a new tool to help us negotiate the paddle season Go to the new Pelican Cove website and look under Clubs and Groups Sports and Fitness for Kayak Canoe Club to check out our new web page Erlinda and Terry have set up information for most of our scheduled paddles This information includes directions on how to get to the paddle sites and where to go once you are on the water It includes what you can expect in amenities at each site what kind of wild life you can expect to see at each site and is the site good for a novice paddler or limited to those with more experience Kudos to these two club members for setting up this informative tool Check out this site as additions to the schedule will be listed here Also I will be sending out reminders via email to club members prior to each paddle Paddles for 2016 will be published towards the end of 2015 Here are the paddles scheduled for the beginning of the upcoming season Kayak and Canoe 2015 Schedule Thursday October 8 Midnight Pass Monday November 9 Lido Key Mangrove Tunnels Saturday November 21 Collecting Mangrove Buds Contest at Pelican Cove Monday December 7 Midnight Pass Monday December 21 North Creek Mangrove Tunnels and the Upper Lagoon Here s looking forward to a good season See ya ll on the water Excluding a slight expansion to the east there is no change Employees Brian Cole and Chris Freidhof pause for a to the current photo during their stint rebuilding the kayak storage racks boundary which runs parallel to the road leading to the bridge to the Far Harbor The existing landscaping and hedges screening the storage site remain in place Construction is being done by PC staff carpenters after hours which is good for PC as these are our own trusted employees performing this work as opposed to an outside vendor During this period residents continue to have access to their boats Where did the kayaks go that had to be removed temporarily to permit construction A temporary rack was erected in the parking spaces directly across the street and will be removed when the project is complete Thanks go to all residents who rallied to move their boats when requested A number of resident boating enthusiasts including Frank and Louise Rivera Jim and Carol Russell David Schowalter and Dan Alger have volunteered their time and energy to help propel this project from idea to reality within a relatively short time frame This project is a great example of the result of collaboration among owners a PC Committee our Board and Management The project plan is on file in the PC Office Contact any member of the Harbor Committee or Leslie in the PC Office with any questions Summertime fun in the Cove Judy Drohlich tests her new umbrella while vegging on her Kayak in the Cove Judy Drohlich Photo
OCTOBER 2015 5 The investigation of the status of the storm water pipes using our inspection camera has been completed Repainting of street signs and benches has been completed Investigation into the process for cleaning dryer vents has been completed Manager s Report Jack Stevens Acting General Manager With summer ending and the 2015 2016 season getting ready to start the staff has been busy accomplishing summer projects regular maintenance projects and responding to work orders The following summer projects have been completed The storm water pipes connected to the three new storm water silt collection vaults were cleared of roots and other obstructions The Brookhouse pool deck has been repainted The Far Harbor pool has been resurfaced with new tile installed The Far Harbor pool deck has been repainted The Glenhouse pool deck has been repainted The Pavilion pool deck has been repainted New pool chairs including some taller lounge chairs have been installed at the Wilbanks pool The Wilbanks pool deck has been repainted The 2016 Reserve Study has been completed The 2016 Proposed Budget has been submitted by management to the Finance Committee The final phase of a three phase road restoration project has been completed The failing upper level Brookhouse decks have been rebuilt or corrected Five buildings were fumigated for Termites The interior walls of the Pelican Pavilion meeting room and stage were repaired and repainted The following projects are underway The Harbor Club Fitness Facility renovation will be complete later this month The structural steel wood framing mechanical and electrical work is done and drywall has started Engineering data required for a backflow device for the main water line are being compiled Several landscape projects are underway as time permits The Clower Creek kayak storage reconfiguration is underway with phase one completed The following projects are scheduled to begin in October or November Seven carport roofs will be replaced with many others repaired or partially replaced Engineering drawings for the required backflow preventer will be developed Engineering drawings for an extension to the reclaimed water line along Vamo Road will be prepared Expand a number of recycle areas to hold more recyclables Social Club Oktoberfest Party Opens Season Halloween Party Scheduled By Lea Buschgans On September 27 Pelican Cove enjoyed their version of an Oktoberfest celebration Members of the Social Club and their guests enjoyed authentic German food drinks and desserts Led by Ilse Soar the committee transformed the Pavilion into a Hofbrau House Polka music was provided and all enjoyed the festivities Thanks to all who volunteered to make this a Wunderbar party Now it is time to start thinking about your Halloween costume for the PCSC Halloween Party on October 25 L R Lea Buschgans Ilse Soar and Beth Duggan raise their steins in a salute to Oktoberfest Lisa Yellin Photo
OCTOBER 2015 6 Pelican Programs By Felice Perlmutter and Libby Ross Pelican Programs 8 p m The winter season is approaching and we are all anticipating the wonderful array of Pelican Programs that are in the offing An unusual season it will be Jan 5 Jerry Bilik Mar 8 Beethoven Jan 18 Sarasota Ballet Mar 18 Guardianship As our opener we will feature our talented Jerry Bilik who always starts our season with a bang So be sure you hold Tuesday January 5 We will not disclose what will be in store for you but you can count on its being first rate Feb 2 A Picasso Mar 28 Rogers and Hammerstein The Sarasota Ballet will be featured on Monday January 18 as Director Iain Webb talks about the company s 25th anniversary season and the exciting new adventures ahead With a mission to enrich lives captivate emotions and strengthen the community through the art of dance the Sarasota Ballet is one of the most unique dance troops in the country In a first for Pelican Programs we will present a live two character stage play A Picasso on the Pavilion stage on Tuesday February 2 starring Roxanne Fay The play dramatizes an encounter in occupied Paris 1941 between the Spanish expatriate artist and a cultural attach from Berlin as Picasso makes a desperate attempt to save his work Come learn about Ca d Zan a Sarasota treasure on Tuesday February 23 and hear Ron Mccarty curator and keeper of Ca D Zan who will provide us with special insights regarding this museum PC resident Jeremy Yudkin a Professor of Music at Boston University will present a program on Beethoven on Tuesday March 8 Among other impressive credentials Jeremy is the pre concert lecturer for the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood every year so his talk is sure to be vastly informative and entertaining Feb 23 Ca d Zan Beauty is in the eye By Erlinda Rejino Pelican Cove is truly a spectacular space its lush vegetation water views picturesque landscapes and active community contribute to its beauty How to capture that beauty and share it with the public and the Pelican Cove community via the revised website was the challenge faced by the Communication Committee s Website Review Team The team turned to the Pelican Cove Photography Club for help Updated photographs were needed in a number of areas including the banner at the top of the website the amenities section the new club and group descriptions and the revised photo gallery Many Photography Club members graciously provided photographs for consideration A great many photographs were used There are still many areas of the website where updated photos are needed Thanks to the artistic eye of the Photography Club we have been able to seed the Photo Gallery and other areas of the website We hope this will encourage other club members and other members of the community to submit their photos for consideration All you ever wanted to know about the Elder Guardianship legislation in Florida will be most ably presented by Senator Nancy Detert Florida District 25 its sponsor Barbara Peters Smith the reporter from the Herald Tribune who highlighted a series on the subject will join the Senator on March 18 Coffee Program Wednesday January 16 Coffee with Bertha Palmer Rogers and Hammerstein will be with us in an unusual presentation by Carol Kaufman renowned music analyst and pre concert lecturer for the Sarasota Orchestra Our own Bobby Barnhardt and Wanda Darlington will lead a home grown Pelican Cove band and invite us to sing along on March 28 By Janet Hasselbring Note that all Pelican Programs will begin at 8 pm and all will be in the Pavilion EXCEPT for March 18 which will be in Harbor Club So prepare for a season of stimulation and fun Plan to join us for The Pelican Programs Want to learn about the history of Pelican Cove and Sarasota Then mark your calendars The first Coffee Program of 2015 2016 will Bertha Palmer Breakfast Photo feature our neighbor Bertha Palmer Learn about this early settler of Sarasota and her tremendous impact on our area Historic Spanish Point Myakka State Park and the city of Sarasota Presenter Jane Glennon Public Programs Coordinator Historic Spanish Point Coffee at 9 30 program at 10 a m Your donations are welcome
OCTOBER 2015 7 The Philatelist and the Professor By Selden Sutton PC 35th Anniversary is November 15 By Virginia Tashian and Rita Weingarten Pelican Cove s 35th Anniversary celebration will take place on Sunday November 15 at the Pelican Pavilion from 3 to 5 p m Everyone is invited to attend There will be no charge for the event which is sponsored by the Social Club and by members of the Communications Committee among others Tickets will be required and these will be distributed on Thursday November 5 from 10 a m to 12 noon in the lobby of the Pelican Pavilion Save the date and watch for flyers and more information in the November issue of PC News Why this celebration On November 15 1980 the owners by majority and the Boards of Directors of the original seventeen condominiums in PC voted to merge into one condominium under one Board of Directors giving us the structure and freedom we know today Eighty nine percent of owners cast votes in favor as did 100 percent of lienholders This was quite an achievement given the difficulty found in obtaining the required two thirds majority of owner votes on some more recent issues It is hoped that many of the some thirty or more owners founders who supported this merger and still own their units will attend the event Thanks go to talented resident cartoonist Jean Gomoll for depicting the happily celebrating pelicans you see on this page Watch Community Channel 195 for event updates Ann Triggle What do a distinguished philatelist and a distinguished professor of pharmacology have in common Quite a lot actually A notable collaboration between Pelican Cove residents Ann and David Triggle is an example In 1985 David then Dean of the School of Pharmacy at State University of New York Buffalo asked his wife Ann to curate an apothecary exhibit to celebrate the history of pharmacy The exhibit was to mark the School s centennial the following year Ann s experience as an internationally recognized thematic philatelist with extensive experience in researching creating and organizing national and international congresses for the world s millions of stamp collectors as well as her background in chemistry made her the perfect choice Stamp collecting for many famously Franklin Roosevelt Warren Buffet and even our own Murray Sherry is often theme specific as Ann s colorful exhibit of health stamps for ladies of the evening in Argentina demonstrates Historical value and geographical aspects also come into play Ann s experience therefore translated seamlessly to her new curatorial duties SUNY s School of Pharmacy is the oldest public school of pharmacy in New York State And the rich history of pharmacy in the region during the period between the late 1700s to the mid 1990s turned out to be a gold mine Western New York was a major area for patent medicine production at the time elixirs tonics stimulants hair restorers and remedies for female ills were plentiful Many of these remedies contained generous amounts of alcohol opium cocaine or marijuana Ann observes No doubt they had effects albeit not necessarily curative Upton Sinclair s continued on page 11

OCTOBER 2015 Meet Your Neighbor Elca Branman By Donna Anderson There is a path in Far Harbor where large still life ceramic sculptures flank the entrance Follow it toward the creek You will find a gallery of diverse imaginative pieces striking statues and whimsical signs Enjoy In moments you will have learned something of the talent uniqueness and humor of Elca Branman Elca speaks with a kind of breathless delight Her sentences are punctuated with laughter energy and the occasional four letter word her eyes spark with feeling A large part of my happiness is Pelican Cove she says It s nourishing Many factors present and past nourish her I m just lucky she says And I married the right guy Elca came to clay somewhat late Messes weren t allowed in her childhood home giving rise to an early exit at 17 On her own creativity blossomed She dabbled in a variety of arts and crafts forms even selling ideas to Woman s Day magazine After marriage she studied a year at The Cooper Union a prestigious art and architecture school in New York Many women had to make tough choices then however When their children were young and money was tight she left school to stay home Her husband Irving gifted her a free evening weekly She took classes taught by master potter Karen Karnes and a passion was born Karnes taught her the process and standards of working clay but results from her studio are all Elca My ideas and concepts just come It s a joyous gift She is unable to select a favorite piece I ve always liked this she says pointing to a group of five or six figures It s not skillful but all over the world there are women crying because of wars A second a human head driven through with spikes is so physically wrought that it s difficult to examine I don t know if you have a close relative or someone who has a mental illness They hurt far worse than the pain they give to people I think it s a good piece Another exceptional work a nude self portrait was displayed at the Art Fair talked about writing a book They have a topic and a title How to Make Friends with Your Mother Elca Branman Elca doubts if they will really write it but thinks they should Where Megan and I are now there is nothing between us Whatever things I did it s over we FaceTime and it s delicious The person she mentions most is her husband In 1999 they began a new life here Elca came reluctantly She left a house that she loved with views of New York s Schawngunk Mountains and a studio where her creativity reigned Irving loved Florida He played tennis and got involved in the community She felt that it was really his turn he was so good to me Irving wasn t the sort of man she thought she would marry not a writer sculptor or painter However he was kind and loving and as smart as I was and a nifty man They met married and had a family They resided intentionally with Quakers and do gooders They lived abroad life changing years in Turkey and Ecuador and brought back domestic help that enabled her to finish her education They enjoyed life Irving was raised by his widowed mother and deeply respected women When Elca chose clay he learned to build the kilns she needed After the children were grown they moved from Manhattan to Stone Ridge where with a week of classes he with Elca in tow built their new home It was half residence half studio with no guestrooms she chortles Soon he was firing her pots boxing and driving them across the valley and displaying them for sale He would then go off and be pleasant to customers He was so happy We used to kid him Scratch a Jew find a peddler Once here Irving became involved on the Board advocated for children in court played tennis and cooked I have a book in which I wrote down every different thing he made every day for a year He was a wonderful cook Irving died in 2004 His death gave Elca great heartache but as time passed it turned into something more meaningful I thought when he died I would never recover The truth of the matter is I m a very happy person now It has nothing to do with loving him but my life feels very full very complete very good Widowhood is usually the last experience of womanhood Forgive me I tend to be like a missionary but it s important that women know You end up owning your life at last totally It is an amazing experience
