OCTOBER 2016 3 President s Post By Gary Gulden Dear Neighbors to engage in the process the Finance Committee s October 5 meeting where it will determine its budget recommendation to the board and the board s October 11 workshop and October 18 meeting Welcome to the start of the season here at Pelican Cove The staff has completed its list of major summer projects notable among which are the new gatehouse and the complete replacement of the long boardwalk along the Cove the vacant spots in the carports are starting to fill as our snowbirds begin to return in the evening you can notice lights in more windows our committees and board have busy agendas This is the month when the Finance Committee presents its recommendations to the board and the board makes its decision on the 2017 budget There are a number of special items being considered in the budget including funding for a climate change adaptation study and several infrastructure investments your voice on these potential expenditures is both welcome and important I hope that you took the opportunity to participate in the Finance Committee s budget workshop in late September This month you have three more opportunities Let me also remind you once again that although our 2017 Board of Directors election may seem a long way off now is not too soon for you to start thinking about standing for election as a new member of our board and to begin urging others you feel would be strong directors to do so The health and vitality of this community depend on the quality of the board we elect Directors terms are normally for two years and while a director may serve a maximum of two such terms consecutively there are always openings to be filled Ospreys Eagles Fish and Manatees Oh My passes at the osprey it dropped the fish The eagle dove to the water scooped up the fish and flew to the trees on the north side of Pelican Cove By Pete DeMar I love the joy of nature and I got a bucket list worth on May 1 And all I had to do was walk down the steps from the boardwalk at the point follow the path through the mangroves and wade into our own little cove When I reached the water I saw a large wake slowly moving northward I knew it had to be a manatee because a porpoise would have had a fin I didn t think any more about it just concentrated on what I had come for fishing I m not a serious fisherman but I enjoy the challenge of catching a fish normally I catch and release I waded about a third of the way between the observation deck at the point and the mangrove island a little over waist deep I was having a great time casting and retrieving not getting any hits but having fun anyway when I heard a sound overhead and looked up What I saw was something I had heard about but never expected to see An adult bald eagle was diving after an osprey that had a fish in its talons After the eagle made two Finally in last month s issue of the PC News our capable editor Alice Hawrilenko informed us that she and her husband Len will be moving soon This is her final issue before leaving Alice you have done a terrific job as our editor and I know everyone will join me as I express my appreciation and gratitude for the generous gifts of your time and talents that you ve given us Although your sailing regatta participants may secretly be relieved to have such a fierce competitor depart they and we all will miss you and wish you and Len all the best in your new home up in the Panhandle The Pelican Cove News has had a long tradition of resident editors We now need to find a successor to Alice and urge anyone with in interest in this to get in touch with Aliceahawrilenko gmail com to learn more Wow I thought what an experience Then as I was thinking how neat that was and casting and retrieving I sensed The PC anhinga who hangs out something Slowly I scanned by the fishing dock willingly the water around me and saw posed for this photo after the photographer gave up her pursuit a large object blocking part of of the eagle and the ospreythe light colored bay bottom Alice Hawrilenko photo All of a sudden I realized it was an adult manatee that didn t know I was there I could have touched it with my pole Of course I didn t because I wanted to prolong the moment The manatee slowly moved past Eagle osprey manatee yes what an experience What a day Editor s Note Pete and Pat DeMar no longer reside in Pelican Cove They sold their unit shortly before press time for this issue of the PC News

OCTOBER 2016 4 Your Generosity Makes our Concerts Possible Coffee Programs Downsizeology Road Show By Joel Leonard By Janet Hasselbring Cultural Events depends completely on donations and we are appreciative of every donation Only some administrative and staff support comes from the general funds Donations come in the form of individual ticket donations for each performance season ticket donations and donations directly to the Legacy Fund Unfortunately last year direct donations to the Legacy Fund for Cultural Events amounted to only several hundred dollars In fact in the last several years the number and size of donations to the AM E Fund has decreased to the lowest amount in its history As a result the funds that the Cultural Events program depends on are being depleted This is undoubtedly due in part to a lack of awareness about this fund a deficiency that hopefully can be rectified by this and future articles in this newsletter This winter my husband Don and I will bring a special guest to the Cove with us the PepsiCola Gibson Girl We purchased this piece at an antique show and when we downsized a few years ago it survived Marie Kondo s signature question Does it tokimeku does it spark joy Joy yes and mystery too We know it s a Pepsi advertising piece but what is its meaning value and history That s what we ll learn on Thursday January 26 when Andy Rousseau the Downsizeology guru returns to the coffee programs podium with his Downsizeology Treasure Roadshow Andy will talk about what s hot and what s not and the current trends He ll discuss the values of different categories and types of personal property in today s market In the last newsletter there was an informative description of the Legacy Fund Briefly this fund which is overseen by the Board is a mechanism for receiving donations from Pelican Cove residents for enhancing our physical and social environment If desired the donation is recorded in the Book of Tribute along with the person or group who is being honored by the gift There are several subaccounts within the Legacy Fund and the sub fund that over the years has been the recipient of most of the donations is the Arts Music and Entertainment Fund AM E which was originally established to create and maintain the high quality Cultural Events program that is so popular in Pelican Cove You should be aware that all donations whatever the source are used entirely for fees for the performers Were it not for ticket donations our funds would be completely depleted in just a few years And even with the current level of donations we lose about two thousand dollars per year Our volunteer Cultural Events Committee would like to encourage residents who feel they can be generous to make a special non tax deductible contribution to the Legacy Fund for the Cultural Events programs 25 minimum more if possible If you wish you can have it entered into the Book of Tribute in honor of an occasion or someone special alive or deceased There is an opportunity for a resident to sponsor a portion of or an entire performance with appropriate acknowledgment Finally there are provisions for making a bequest in a will Sarah Metcalf business manager Rita Weingarten chair of the Legacy Fund or I will be glad to answer any questions about your donation We know many of you would like to preserve this wonderful cultural program and we are appreciative of your understanding and generosity You can contact me by phone or by email 941 882 3093 joel leonard comcast net PC residents are invited to bring in one or two interesting items to display during the coffee hour at 9 30 a m Andy will then assess and evaluate these items during the program at 10 00 So when you head to the Cove this year remember to pack an item of interest one that sparks joy and one you d like to know more about Here s the rest of the coffee programs schedule Note the change to Thursdays for two of this year s programs 1 Thursday February 23 John Adler PC resident and historian presents highlights from his book Doomed by Cartoon How Cartoonist Thomas Nast and the NYT Brought down Boss Tweed and His Ring of Thieves 2 Monday February 13 PC resident Ruth Brandwein shares her impressions of Iran following her trip there this summer 3 Tuesday March 21 Pelican Cove Follies showcasing the talent of our PC residents directed by JoAnn Moran and Laura Lehrman 4 Wednesday March 22 Selah Freedom another look at human trafficking in Sarasota and what we can do to help 5 Thursday March 23 The Amish in Sarasota MOVIE NIGHT By Earl Kaplan Two movie nights this month Sunday October 2 and Sunday October 16 at 7 p m at the Pelican Pavilion Watch for more information on Channel 195 or the PC web site www pelicancovecondo com Movie Nights are open to all residents and are sponsored by the PC Social Club

OCTOBER 2016 6 My Sliders Who Maintains Them Along with all the heavy rain we ve had this summer have come a number of problems involving water damage from inadequately maintained sliding doors on enclosed lanais Here are some things you should know to prevent these problems You have sole responsibility for the maintenance of any exterior sliding doors installed in your lanai Glass enclosed lanais were not part of the original construction of your unit or of any other units in Pelican Cove If you have exterior sliding doors on your lanai unless you installed them yourself they were added by a previous owner and in either case are considered a modification of a common element This is important to understand because any modification of a common element of your unit becomes your sole responsibility to maintain whether you made the modification or it was done by a prior owner Failure to properly maintain the exterior sliding glass doors on your lanai can result in significant water damage to the structure of your or neighboring units for which you can be held financially responsible New Season New Planners Needed By Beth Duggan The Social Club is the oldest club in Pelican Cove Like all clubs it depends upon volunteers to make things work Two members have recently chaired six parties and they are taking on two more this season We thank them We still need chairpersons for October November January April and May Helpers are always needed It s a fact that working on a party is fun and a chance to meet people That s the reason some of the same volunteers come back year after year The Social Club Board is always ready to assist with lists of caterers past menus entertainers shoppers decorators and past experience Please call or e mail any member of the Social Club board to volunteer to help keep the club going as strong as ever With over 175 members this should be a great year Beth Duggan Board of Directors 941 350 6111 beth4g comcast net Lea Buschgans 410 703 8702 lbuschgans gmail com Jeff Fernald 941 228 6689 jeffsplace2 comcast net Ro Forgie 941 321 9613 ros4g comcast net Richard Sagar 303 903 4333 rsager888 gmail com Ilse Soar 413 626 0222 ilsetom webtv net Here are several things you must do to be sure your lanai sliding glass doors are properly cared for Make sure the seals on your exterior sliding glass doors don t allow water to enter your lanai Keep the tracks your doors glide on clean and free of any debris that will prevent them from draining any rainwater that gets in them Make sure any little drain holes in the tracks are kept open and also that the weep holes underneath the frame of your lanai s outside metal railings are kept clear so rainwater accumulating between the track and the metal frame of the railing can drain outside Most owners know about the importance of the first two items on this list but fewer may be aware of the little drain holes in the tracks and the weep holes beneath the frame of the exterior metal railings As a result these two areas are often overlooked allowing water to accumulate where it can do damage Please call these to the attention of the people who clean your sliders Some of our staff who offer afterhours help can also service these trouble spots Even with proper owner maintenance your sliders still rely on caulking or other sealants to keep moisture out of the building These sealants shrink and lose their elasticity with age and can allow water into the buildings When this occurs the old sealants must be replenished to maintain a watertight barrier In some situations the entire assembly must be removed and properly reinstalled or replaced in order to accomplish this task This is typically more involved than can be handled by an owner and an outside vendor may need to be called in to properly reseal the sliders Plan Now for Yacht Club Rendezvous By John Glascock As the summer winds down and Pelican Cove starts to become busy again the Yacht Club looks back on a hot but enjoyable summer season I started in June with a small and friendly get together at Turtle Beach In July we met at O Leary s Tiki Hut and the August rendezvous was at NoKoMo s Sunset Hut Most recently we traveled down the road to Evie s at Spanish Point Upcoming events will include meetings at Dockside Waterfront Grill at Marker 4 in Venice on Wednesday October 19 and November 15 we return to the very popular Venice Yacht Club Members are reminded to get their reservation forms in to the office on time so plans can be made to accommodate us at these wonderful sites If you cannot get to the office but wish to attend please contact Jean Gomoll at 941 966 7244

OCTOBER 2016 Meet Your Neighbor Ginette Hersh By Donna Anderson Some people are born storytellers and Ginette Hersh is one of them To sit across the table from her to hear her warm spellbinding voice disclose tales of hardship and loss and triumph and happiness is indeed a remarkable experience Ginette was born in Paris in 1927 Her parents Sarah and Leon Wagner were Poles who met and married there six weeks after Sarah s immigration Early in the marriage they moved to Dijon and opened a second hand clothing store They lived there with Ginette s Aunt Rachelle and her grandmother Golda until the German invasion Ginette was the first child to survive delivery and the only one within the home for eight years She was cherished Sarah Wagner was an extraordinary woman Many of Ginette s indelible memories are of her mother s wisdom courage and perseverance Though details are sketchy at 4 Ginette became quite ill A series of four shots were routinely prescribed but Sarah didn t trust the doctor or the vaccine and wouldn t allow it Children perished from treatment That was the first time my mother saved my life Ginette says She did it more than once At eight years of age Ginette stumbled into a bramble of rusted wire They operated that night without penicillin antibiotics or sterile safeguards By midnight her leg was gangrenous and they planned to amputate I remember I can hear it my mother screaming It s a girl You re going to ruin her life Her parents flew in a surgeon from Paris Ginette doesn t remember what he did but her leg was in a metal brace for three months and she was abed another four With her mother s insistence that leg was saved War broke out The Wagners inventoried their now three first hand stores and mailed some of the best items to Toulouse for future retrieval It would give them income in their new location The day the Germans invaded Paris they packed the car loaded a mattress on top and traveled south to Pau Leon s cousin s house was infested but they were grateful for the roof over their heads Ginette was 12 years old The merchandise shipped from Dijon never made it to Toulouse it went straight to Germany We had nothing Boldly and without papers Sarah returned to Dijon to run the store Leon took the children to Villeurbanne outside of Lyon and rented an apartment Sarah would come when she could When she could not she smuggled cash by post Once she packed 1000 franc notes into a nearly emptied tube of 7 toothpaste larger than those now leaving little bits of paste on the bottom and top Another time she stuffed a small toy horse with bills packing the carton with added odds and ends An officer held back that second package ripped it open emptied the contents and clumsily mislaid the horse A second soldier saw the mistake and repacked it Sarah watched as this transpired Ginette says We got it Throughout this time her mother did as much as she could going back and forth taking a chance with her life Finally conditions were too serious to stay in Dijon Sarah begged her sister Rachelle to join them One day Ginette s petite blonde loving and beloved aunt was approached by a policeman He requested that she come with him and bring her mother and two daughters Rachelle understood immediately She went with him on condition that he let the others go They heard from her twice thereafter once transiting Drancy and again from the camp at Pithiviers Then no more Ginette still remembers the mayhem her young cousins tears the tremendous scream coming out of my uncle s chest as the family learned of Rachelle s fate Ginette s family was given two days to leave their apartment in Villeurbanne 48 hours later a friend Jean noticed SS officers taking Jews from their homes and marking each door with a blue swastika indicating relocation Jean bought similar chalk drew a swastika on the Wagner door and warned them against light or noise Later her father overheard officers discussing the blue emblem Neither remembered marking it but decided someone else must have done the job We survived that way all along Ginette says All along There are many stories her safe haven at boarding school her grandmother s arrest the long awaited liberation each poignantly and unforgettably told Ginette still speaks to schools and religious groups sharing history that people would otherwise learn less intimately and well One last account must be included here When Rachelle was arrested a boy Charles helped her children and mother escape Dijon Years passed One day Golda was shopping and saw Charles coming toward her Golda felt he had saved her life so she brought him home to meet the family Charlie fell in love Though Ginette broke their first engagement and was subsequently betrothed to two others Charlie always remembered her When he acquired papers to go to New York Ginette finally consented He promised me the moon He said Come to America Marry me I was so lucky all my life She fell in love with him after their wedding I married the right man Ginette moved to Pelican Cove in 1989 six years after Charlie died She still feels this is paradise Many activities she once enjoyed now exceed her time and energy However she is writing everything down So many stories
