JUNE JULY 2017 Meet Your Neighbor The Book Clubbers of Pelican Cove By Donna Anderson The solstice is three weeks away but we paradise dwellers have realized if not the dog days a definite rise in dew points and temperatures that state unequivocally Summer is Here Though our lifestyle reveals permanent vacation status warmer afternoons dictate more beach pool and airconditioned lanai time often requiring a good book Best sellers and beach reads are regular conversation fodder these days But what is there for those of us who desire more in depth conversations about plot and character fact versus fiction the culture society ethnicity slant etc discovered in books we esteem Voila The elusive book club I have discovered four such groups in Pelican Cove and feel sure the number is at least double that They reside under the radar for various reasons Membership is likely limited to the size of their living rooms Groups tend to form among like minded readers by age gender and length of residence New members are usually introduced only when there is a vacancy Little however offers the anticipation of a shared story the exchange of ideas and life experiences the lasting friendships that book clubs provide Group 1 Susan Feltus says We have nine members and would accept one more We meet from December through April Members of the group facilitate and host the discussion in their condos on a volunteer basis 2016 17 was our fourth season as a group We read literary fiction and history and have an informal tradition of reading one book each year about Florida Last season that book was Cross Creek by Marjorie Rawlings the Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Yearling Calva Leonard and I couldn t think of anything that makes us a unique group other than our collective brilliance beauty and charm Seriously it is a group of good readers and good people Group 2 Carol Russell says We have 10 members but we rarely get everyone at once Our membership is fluid with new readers joining and others leaving JoEllen DeMarco a former librarian was our fearless leader but she has graduated to the big library in the sky and we miss her We take turns hosting at our houses The host prepares a general introduction about the author and background of the book We seem to talk less about the story s details and more about the applications the story has to history personal experiences other authors world events etc Fiction and nonfiction get equal billing and both open our worlds to old and new authors historical events and subjects that we knew little or nothing about like Dead Wake The Last Crossing of the Lusitania and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks We read about mental institutions leper colonies and more Sometimes we pair a book with a film that will be coming 9 out One time we each picked a famous woman from this century so everyone read a different book but the sharing was very educational June s book will be Crowns of Thorns and Glory about Mary Todd Lincoln and Varina Davis the two first ladies of the Civil War The book we read about the Orphan Trains oriented us before a lecture given by a terrific historian at Spanish Point We meet once a month usually year round at 7 15 so no one asks Is it at 7 or 7 30 The Book Clubbers of Pelican Cove 3 This group was started about 10 years ago by Jean Baker Miller now deceased and Bev Birns who has moved north They began focusing on black American women writers Recently they have included books by women of color choosing titles from foreign shores Topics and theme continue to evolve Jean Yellin mentioned that when they organized refreshments were barred They had done enough hosting in their lives and wanted serious discussions only We don t serve so much as crackers It is all about the book all the time and that certainly takes the pressure off the month s host Ruth Brandwein adds It s an amazing group Group 4 The largest book club is facilitated by Helene Crawford She says When I first arrived here I was told that you had to be interviewed to get into an existing group So I started my own and people came We have been meeting to discuss books for at least seven years There are 29 people on the mailing list Since most participants are snowbirds and busy the average attendance is about fifteen During discussions we stay on topic Our members are articulate serious and love to read We select our books over the summer Members recommend one they have read and think the group will like The list of suggestions is usually long and it sometimes takes three or four votes before we arrive at the five books we will read during the upcoming season We meet at different houses Our host usually serves some simple goodies In addition to these clubs groups are offered in Sarasota churches and synagogues at the libraries and at The Ringling to name three My husband belongs to a men s group at our church and men s clubs may exist here in the Cove If you want to be in dialogue about manuscripts and authors but no vacancies exist in the above groups post ads on the bulletin boards and like Helene begin your own Enjoy
